LEWISBURG, Pa. - Whittney Henry (Mathews, Va./Mathews), a member of the Bucknell women's rowing team, continued her training through the summer months with widespread success, headlining the list of Bison who posted notable results this past summer. She completed her summer rowing by placing second in the senior lightweight pair and winning the senior B lightweight pair at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catherine's, Ontario.
Henry, a junior for the Bison, rowed with high school teammate Whitney Phaup, who is about to begin her senior year at Rhode Island.
In addition to the success at the Canadian Henley Regatta, Henry and Phaup won the women's open pair at the Independence Day Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., in early July. They followed with strong performances at the U.S. Rowing Club Nationals in Cherry Hill, N.J., as they won the intermediate lightweight pair, placed second in the senior lightweight pair and finished third in the intermediate women's 4+.
Henry, one of eight juniors on the Bucknell roster, was an integral part of the Bison success in 2006-07. She sat bow seat in the varsity four that won the Head of the Charles last fall and later helped the varsity eight win its second consecutive Patriot League title as well as the ECAC Metro Championship. Henry finished the 2007 spring campaign in the five seat of the varsity lightweight eight that won the IRA National Championship. With her many contributions throughout the year, Henry was recognized as an All-Patriot League selection, a First Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection and was named a Lightweight All-American.
A number of other Bucknell rowers competed throughout the summer, including three members of the incoming freshman class. Elizabeth Barnett (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) followed Henry by placing third at the U.S. Rowing Club Nationals in the senior lightweight pair. Christina Cabiati (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) and Ashley Gennings (Leesburg, Va./Bishop O'Connell) both competed for Thompson's Boat Club out of Washington, D.C. Gennings won the junior 4+, while both women won the junior 8+ at the U.S. Rowing Club Nationals. They also raced at the Canadian Henley and took third in the junior 8+.
With the start of classes on Wednesday, Bucknell begins fall practices this week. The addition of a strong recruiting class has the Bison ready for their fall season, which features sculling and racing opportunities at the Navy Day and Head of the Schuylkill Regattas. Both events will take place in Philadelphia, Pa., on the Schuylkill River in October.
