2007 NFHCA Top-20 Preseason Poll
LEWISBURG, Pa. - The National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced the 2007 Division I Preseason Poll today, placing Bucknell on the list of "others receiving votes" with three points.
With the start of the 2007 season just around the corner, head coach Heather Lewis is pleased with this national recognition. "We are flattered at the attention that our program is receiving, but at the same time we recognize that we need to take this season one moment at a time," said Lewis.
Lewis is entering her 16th season with Bucknell, accompanied by assistants Michelle Marks (third season) and Melissa Bostwick (second season).
Bucknell returns seven starters and welcomes six newcomers this season. Among the returning starters are three of the Bison's top-five scorers from last season.
Looking at the 2007 squad, Lewis notes that "we are blessed with some outstanding athleticism and are fortunate to have tremendous leadership - two qualities necessary to meet with success on the field."
Seniors Kelly Hoffman (Boyertown, Pa./Oley Valley H.S.), Katie Leinen (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East H.S.), Chyncia Smith (Flemington, N.J.), and Lindsey Weller (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard H.S.) will provide a solid foundation of leadership and experience throughout the season.
The Bison are set to travel to Columbus, Ohio this weekend to face Kent State on Saturday and Ohio State on Sunday. The Golden Flashes received four votes in the NFHCA preseason poll and the Buckeyes were ranked 13th on the list.
"Our ranking is a tribute to the hard work and talent that has gone into this program," noted Lewis, "It is now up to the team to meet the expectations that we have set on ourselves and that have been set on us by others."
