LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Former Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Sean Conover, a 2006 Bucknell graduate, turned in an impressive performance for the Tennessee Titans in the NFL team's first preseason game of the year on Saturday night against the Washington Redskins.
Conover, who played in six regular-season games for the Titans last season, is currently listed No. 2 on the depth chart at one of the defensive end positions. In Saturday's 14-6 loss to the Redskins, he recorded a sack, recovered a fumble on the opening series of the night and was also credited with two solo tackles and another quarterback knockdown. The sack of veteran QB Mark Brunell came on a 3rd-and-4 play and forced a punt.
Last season Conover became the first Bucknell alum to play in an NFL game since Brian Henesey saw brief action with the Arizona Cardinals in 1994. He finished with nine tackles in six games after being activated from the practice squad in late November. He was signed by Tennessee as an undrafted free agent in May 2006.
At Bucknell, Conover finished recorded 17.5 career sacks, tied for fifth-most in school history, even though he played tight end as a freshman. He was a Second Team All-America selection after a junior year in which he had 10.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss.
The Titans have three preseason games remaining -- at New England on Aug. 17, at Buffalo on Aug. 24 and home against Green Bay on Aug. 30 -- before opening the regular season on Sept. 9 at Jacksonville. The Titans are slated to play twice on Monday Night Football this season, in Week 3 at New Orleans and Week 11 at Denver.
