Previous Installments of Bucknell Women's Rowing Coach's Corner
A lot has happened since my last posting in January. To sum it up, it was an absolute dream of a season! It was a team effort from rowers to parents, friends and professors. Most importantly, however, this year's success is a result of all of the rowers who have put their blood, sweat and tears into the Bucknell program over the past 24 years. The current team is very aware of who has come before them, and that our current success comes from the efforts of so many. On behalf of the team, thanks for everything.
I'll be sure to write again in the fall about what lies ahead. But for now, I hope everyone can enjoy what 2006-2007 meant for the program. Please take a moment to visit the website, read the journal entries from the team, or take a look at the pictures in the photo galleries. It is a great time to be a Bucknell Bison. We hope you can share the excitement with us.
Two proud memories to share with you...
First: The afternoon before the Patriot League Championship. Seeded first and expected to win, the varsity eight was one big ball of tension. We had two days of sub-par practices and there was an overwhelming feeling of "doom" in the group. So we had a short conversation about it and afterwards it hit me like a bolt of lightning. The synergy, trust and faith that they had in each other was the source of the tension. The rowers didn't say it, but you could tell they were worried about letting each other down, not their parents or their coach. It is difficult to describe, but it was a moment when I thought it is a great day to be on this team.
Second: Between the heat and the final at the IRA Lightweight National Championship. Another difficult-to-describe feeling, but I'll try. The three weeks leading up to the race had been like an entirely separate season. The women had grown from the experiences of the spring campaign and they all seemed a year older and wiser. After having the fastest time of both heats, they went about the business of enjoying the process. Having learned from their past experiences as a program, they were loose and relaxed. Although I was still nervous, I was also very proud. They were the newest version of what it meant to be a Bucknell rower.
Have a great summer and please feel free to say hello using the message center below. The team and coaches would love to hear from you!
