Trio of Bucknell Women's Tennis Athletes Earn All-Patriot League Honors

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team was honored by the Patriot League office with three all-league selections Monday and also took home a major award. Freshman Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) copped the Patriot League Rookie of the Year award and earn first-team accolades. Sophomore Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) was also named to the First Team All-Patriot League squad, while sophomore Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) picked up second-team plaudits.
Varela became the second women's tennis player in Bucknell history to earn the Rookie of the Year award, joining Veronica Brown, who claimed the honor in 2001 and is the school's career wins leader. The Quito, Ecuador, native, compiled a singles record of 9-5 in the spring while mainly playing in the No. 1 spot. She also went 9-2 in tournament play for an overall singles mark of 18-7.
Varela teamed with Globerman in doubles to produce a record of 8-5, while playing in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. In the fall, the duo went 10-0 in tournament play for an overall mark of 18-5. Combined, she ended her freshman season with a 36-16 record.
Gamboa got off to a slow start in the spring but turned it around in the middle of the season to tally an 11-12 mark while playing in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Highlighting the turnaround was a six-match winning streak. She was the only Bison to go undefeated against Patriot League foes. For the season, Gamboa went 3-5 in the fall for an overall record of 14-17 in singles play.
When teamed with freshman Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), the pair went 9-12 in the spring, while going 8-4 in the fall for an overall record of 17-16. This season she accumulated an overall record of 31-33. For her career, the sophomore has produced a 69-65 record which ranks her 11th at Bucknell in career victories.
Globerman recorded a mark of 8-11, and a 3-1 record in league play, while playing in the No. 2 through No. 4 spots of the lineup. With a 4-7 record during the fall, she ended the season with a 12-18 overall singles mark. In doubles, Globerman went 21-12 while mostly playing with Varela. Combined for the season, the sophomore went 33-30 in 2007 and owns a career record of 59-61, which ties her for 17th all-time in wins.
Bucknell ended the 200-07 season with an 8-16 mark, while tallying its third straight Patriot League runner-up trophy.
