LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior Erin Curatola (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Softball Team, announced Thursday by CoSIDA. By virtue of her selection to the first team, Curatola, a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, is now a finalist for Academic All-America honors.
To be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.20 grade-point average and be a starter or key reserve on his or her team.
Curatola, who was mainly a designated player this past season, led the team with a career-high .342 batting average. Her 55 hits rank as the third most in program history, one more than Lauren Wible's total from 2005 when she led the nation in hitting.
The right-handed hitting Curatola, who finished the season fifth in the Patriot League in hitting, tied Ashley Carlson for the team lead with 15 multiple-hit games. She tallied a career-high four hits in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Holy Cross in late April.
The lone Bison to start all 49 games, Curatola's best stretch of the year came in mid-April when she hit in a career-high 10 consecutive games, the best of any Bucknell player in 2007. Her batting average skyrocketed from .315 to .347 during that stretch.
Often hitting near the top of the batting order, Curatola was third on the team with 22 runs batted in, tied for fourth with seven doubles and she scored 19 runs to rank third. All three of those figures were career highs.
Curatola also served as a backup catcher for First Team All-Patriot League selection Lauren Litts and did not make an error in 56 chances behind the plate. She was one of just two Bison who handled at least 50 chances to not record an error this past season.
In addition to her pair of Patriot League Academic Honor Roll appearances, Curatola was on the Dean's List last spring. She owns a 3.30 cumulative GPA while majoring in mathematics and has tutored children at local schools during her college career.
Curatola is the fourth Academic All-District II selection in head coach Heather Rakosik's three years at the helm of the Bison. She is also the 12th Bucknell player honored since 2000.
Curatola helped the Bison to a 15-33-1 record in 2007. Bucknell finished fifth in the Patriot League standings with a 7-12 mark, missing out on the Patriot League Tournament, but entered the final weekend alive for a third postseason berth in four years.
