LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell softball team came away with 4-1 win in game one and rallied to tie the second contest, 2-2, in the squad's doubleheader against Delaware at West Fields on Tuesday afternoon. Following the day's action, the Bison are now 15-30-1, while the Blue Hens sit at 15-24-3.
In game one, Delaware jumped on the board early with a run in the first. Katie DeSalvo drove a one-out double into left center, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball.
The Orange and Blue then responded with four in the bottom half of the frame. Sophomore Ashley Carlson (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennbury) led off with an infield single and freshman Mary Pavlovich (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) walked, bringing junior Erin Curatola (River Ridge, N.J./River Dell) to the plate. Curatola roped a double down the left field line to bring in Carlson and tie the score at one. The next batter, senior Lauren Litts (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) blasted a three-run homer over the left field fence to put Bucknell on top, 4-1.
That would be all the offense the Bison would need as junior Christie Wiest (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) held Delaware off the scoreboard the rest of the way. She went the distance, tossing all seven innings and allowing just one run on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts to log the win (9-14). Carolynn Sloat threw all six innings for the Blue Hens and took the loss (9-15) as she surrendered four runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Bucknell trailed early in the second contest, as well, but managed again to erase a deficit. In the top of the second, Delaware took a 1-0 lead after Kim Ovittore opened up with a single to right and later crossed the plate on an RBI single by Barbara Traynor.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bison tied the score at one. Sophomore Kristin Frick (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) reached on an error and freshman Sherry Finkel (Morgantown, W. Va./University) plated her with an RBI double.
The Blue Hens climbed back out in front by a 2-1 margin in their next turn at bat. Allison Borchers singled to begin the seventh and came home on a double to left center by Michelle Kenney.
However, Bucknell answered with the tying run in bottom of the seventh. Freshman Shelly McCormack (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) led off with a double to give the Orange and Blue a runner in scoring position. Sophomore Ashley Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) pinch ran for McCormack, moved to third on a wild pitch and Curatola brought her in with a single up the middle, following an intentional walk to Pavlovich.
Delaware escaped defeat, ending the threat with two strikeouts to force extra innings, where the game would be called at the end of the eighth due to darkness.
Meg Muirhead (Glendale, Calif./Flintridge Acad.) started for the Bison in game two and pitched four innings, allowing one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore Katie McDonald (York, Pa./West York Area) tossed two scoreless innings and gave up one hit with one walk and one strikeout. Sophomore Meaghan Haley (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) worked the remainder of the contest, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and one strikeout over two innings. Samantha Shawn pitched all eight innings for the Blue Hens and gave up two runs, one earned on 10 hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Curatola and Litts accounted for the runs in game one for Bucknell, with one and three RBI, respectively, while Frick paced the squad with two hits in the contest, going 2-for-3. DeSalvo was the lone member of the Blue Hens to finish the opener with more than one hit as she went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. In the second contest, Pavlovich and Finkel both hit 2-for-3 for the Orange and Blue, while Finkel also registered an RBI. For Delaware, Borchers and Kenney both were 2-for-4 at the dish as Borchers scored a run and Kenney notched an RBI.
The Bison will return to action this Saturday, May 5, in Hamilton, N.Y., where team will play its first of two pivotal Patriot League doubleheaders against Colgate, beginning at 1 p.m. Bucknell needs to win at least two games in the series to qualify for the Patriot League tournament.
