FARMVILLE, Va. - In its final tuneup prior to next week's Big South Championship, the Bucknell women's golf team fired its second straight 319 and finished in sixth place at the Tina Barrett/Poplar Hill Invitational, hosted by Longwood. Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) rebounded from a tough second round to shoot a team-best 77 on Tuesday, making her the third different Bison to post that number in the tournament.
Teri Schlang (Scottsdale, Ariz./Stratton Mountain School), who shot 77 in round two on Monday, finished up with an 80 and was Bucknell's top individual finisher (T-24th). Deridre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame), who shot 77-81 on Monday and entered the final round in a tie for 10th place, finished with a 93, dropping her out of the top 30.
Loughney's 77 was only one shot off the low round of the day. She finished in a tie for 29th place.
Also for Bucknell, Kathryn Batchelor (Lawrenceville, N.J./Princeton Day School) carded a 79, her best round of the week, and Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) finished with an 83.
As a team, Bucknell shot 326-319-319 for a 54-hole total of 964, which was just six shots out of third place. Tuesday's 319 was the third-best score in the field, bettering four of the five teams that finished above the Bison. All five Bucknell players posted at least one round in the 70s, a good sign heading into next week's Big South tourney.
Methodist outscored Gardner-Webb 312-329 in the final round and came from behind to win the tournament by eight shots. Old Dominion finished third with a score of 958, followed by High Point at 960 and James Madison at 962.
Bucknell was six shots clear of seventh-place Wofford (970), while Radford (982), Long Island (1022), Dayton (1025), Longwood (1026), Towson (1028) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (1032) rounded out the 13-team field.
Diana Meza of James Madison led the individual chase wire-to-wire, shooting 74-76-78 to win by two shots over Methodist's Charlotte Williams.
Charleston Southern is serving as host of the 2007 PUPS Big South Championship, which will be played Apr. 9-11 at Coosaw Creek GC in Charleston, S.C.
Last season, Bucknell shot a school-record 314 in the final round of the Big South Championship and equaled its best-ever finish in the event, placing fifth. Loughney has been Bucknell's top championship finisher in each of the last two years. She placed fifth and earned All-Big South honors in 2005, and she tied for 11th last season.
Birmingham-Southern is the defending team champion.
