BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team avenged its regular-season defeat to Colgate by posting a 4-3 victory over the Raiders in the semifinals of the Patriot League Women's Tennis Championships Sunday afternoon. The Bison, who are the No. 3 seed, advanced to Monday's championship match and will battle No. 1 Army for the third straight year. The Black Knights notched a 5-2 win over Bucknell during the regular season. The Bison improved to 8-13, while Colgate ended its season with an 11-8 mark overall.
In No. 2 doubles, Samantha Inacker and Cameron Thaney held a 4-7 advantage over the team of sophomore Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) and freshman Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), but were unable to close the match up as the Bison came back to win 9-8(2). The Orange and Blue clinched the first point of the match when the pair of sophomore Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) and freshman Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) fought back from a 0-4 deficit to post a 8-6 victory in the No. 1 spot over Jackie Couture and Elise Derose.
In singles action, Calcaterra fell to Inacker, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 3 spot to tie the score at 1-1. Varela stifled Couture, 6-1, 6-3, to put Bucknell up 2-1. Varela's lone Patriot League defeat came to Couture earlier this season. Colgate tied the match up at 2-2 when Cameron Williams took down freshman Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima), 6-3, 7-6(3), in the No. 6 spot.
Globerman dropped Erin Fenn in the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-2, to put the Orange and Blue back on top, but Colgate answered back when Thaney defeated freshman Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 5 spot to make the score 3-3. Down a set in the No. 2 spot, Gamboa came back to win the next two sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, to seal the Bison victory and their third straight trip to the finals.
"This has been our goal since day one," said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt. "We knew in our hearts that we were going to get back to the finals and that's where the win came from."
