LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman attackman Austin Winter (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mt. Lakes) was named the Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Year on Thursday, adding yet another honor to an already packed portfolio. A day earlier, Winter was the only freshman named to the All-Patriot League First Team, and he led the league during the regular season with three PL Rookie of the Week Citations.
Winter has started every game at attack for the 16th-ranked and 11-3 Bison this season. With the Patriot League Tournament coming up this weekend, he is leading the conference in both points (46) and assists (28), and he ranks fifth in the nation in assists. Winter has registered multiple points in 13 of 14 games this season and at least one point in every contest.
Bucknell has now claimed the Patriot League Rookie of the Year two years in a row - Joe Mele earned the honor in 2006 - and five times overall. Other Bison to be named the top rookie were Chris Cara in 2002, Wes Fetchet in 2001 and Ed Joffe 1996.
The Patriot League also announced the other major award winners on Thursday. Colgate claimed both the Offensive Player of the Year (Brandon Corp) and Defensive Player of the Year (Colin Hulme). Army's Adam Fullerton was named Goalie of the Year, while Coach of the Year honors went to Navy's Richie Meade.
The remainder of the All-Patriot League Team was announced on Wednesday. Including Winter, Bucknell placed six players on the first and second teams. Winter and Billy Haire were first-team selections, while Mele, Steve Case, Perry Menzies and Nick Sciubba were second-teamers.
Bucknell is seeded third in the Patriot League Tournament and will face No. 2 Colgate in the semifinals on Friday at 7 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.
