COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) scored a team-high four goals, and three other Bison netted two, as the Bucknell women's water polo team rebounded from a disappointing loss to Maryland earlier in the day to take third place at the Southern Championships with an 11-3 victory over George Washington Saturday evening. It is the second consecutive year Bucknell took third at the event, and the third time in the last four years.
The top two teams in the Southern Championships (Princeton and Maryland) earned automatic berths to next week's Eastern Championship. The Bison, ranked seventh in the latest CWPA poll, are alive for one of the two at-large berths into the eight-team field, which will be announced Monday. Bucknell has played in every Eastern Championship since 2002.
After falling behind Maryland 6-1 in the first quarter earlier in the day, the third-seeded Bison reversed that with a 4-0 first-quarter blanking of fourth-seeded George Washington. They led 7-1 at halftime as they cruised to their 13th consecutive victory over the Colonials.
Jensen paced the Bucknell offense with four goals, although Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) and Jennifer Swoyer (Erie, Pa./McDowell) matched her for team-high honors with four points as each recorded two goals and two assists. The four goals allowed Jensen to reach the 50 plateau for the first time in her four-year career.
Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) rounded out the list of multiple-goal scorers for the Bison as she found the back of the net twice. Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) tallied a team-high three assists from her goalkeeper position to give her 13 on the season, the second-highest total of her career.
Bynum also made six saves in her three quarters of action as she reached the 200-save plateau for the fourth time in her career. She has 201 stops this year and 943 for her career.
In front of Bynum Bucknell's defense was strong with 12 steals. Swoyer led the way with three, while Susan Kingerski (Sugarland, Texas/Saint Agnes Academy), Gins and Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) had two apiece.
Bucknell (14-15) will now await Monday's Eastern Championship selection to see if, and who, they will be playing next week in Princeton, N.J.
