LEWISBURG, Pa. - Behind three goals from Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) two apiece from four other players, the Bucknell women's water polo team equaled its season high goal total in a 13-7 win over George Washington Saturday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium. The victory clinched the third seed in next week's Southern Championships for the Bison.
Bucknell, which completed the regular season 13-14 overall and 2-4 in CWPA Southern Division play, opened a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as it defeated the Colonials for the 12th consecutive time. George Washington (6-19, 0-6 CWPA) drew to within three in the second quarter, but never threatened the Bison lead.
Bucknell's first two goals came from senior Sadie Abuhoff (Cranbury, N.J./The Lawrenceville School), who was one of six seniors in the starting lineup on Senior Day. The goals were the first of the year for Abuhoff, who was also making just the fourth start of her career.
Shana Palencia (Glendale, Calif./Hoover), Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) and Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) rounded out the list of multiple-goal scorers for Bucknell. With three points in the game Jensen pulled to within one of Cody Keffer's career total of 248, which is third on the Bison all-time ledger.
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) had a solid day in goal for Bucknell, stopping eight shots, including three in the decisive first quarter. She now has 184 on the year as she closes in on 200 for the fourth consecutive season.
Abuhoff, Bynum, Jensen, Susan Kingerski (Sugarland, Texas/St. Agnes Academy), Mallory Sullivan (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Western) and Jessica Trimis (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley), Bucknell's Class of 2007, appeared together in the starting lineup along with Gins. Prior to the game each of the six seniors and her parents was honored by Bison head coach John Zeigler.
With its regular season complete, Bucknell will now look ahead to next Saturday's Southern Championships, which will take place in College Park, Md. The Bison will battle host Maryland, a squad they were 1-2 against this year, at 11:30 a.m. The top two teams at the four-team Southern Championships earn automatic berths to the Eastern Championship.
