COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The third-seeded Bucknell women's water polo team fell behind 6-1 at the end of the first quarter and never recovered as it dropped a 14-6 decision to host and second-seeded Maryland Saturday afternoon in the first round of the Southern Championships at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.
The Bison, who fell to 2-3 against the Terrapins this season, including losses in each of the last three meetings, will play George Washington at 7 p.m. Saturday evening in the consolation game of the four-team tournament. The Colonials lost to top-seeded Princeton Saturday morning.
The Bucknell-Maryland matchup was a replay from last year's first round game between the two teams when the Terps jumped out to a 4-2 first quarter advantage and never relinquished the lead. It was similar Saturday as the Bison trailed by five goals at the end of the first quarter and at halftime. They were then outscored 6-3 after intermission as they lost by their largest-ever margin to Maryland, a team they hold a 13-4 all-time record against.
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) made 11 saves in goal for Bucknell as she pushed her season total to 195 with her sixth double-figure save performance of the season. However, the Terrapins became the fourth opponent to score as many as 14 goals against the Bison this season.
Jessica Trimis (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley), Megan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley), Jennifer Swoyer (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho), Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) and Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each netted single goals for Bucknell, which had six different players account for its scores. Rowe added a team-high two assists and three steals.
With her goal, Jensen equaled her career high total of 46 she established last season and also moved into a tie with Cody Keffer for third on the Bison career points list with 248.
By virtue of their wins Saturday, Princeton and Maryland, which is 14-16 on the season, claimed the CWPA Southern Division's two automatic berths to the Eastern Championship, which will be held next week in Princeton, N.J. Bucknell, which is now 13-15 this year, is still alive for one of the at-large berths, which will be announced on Monday. The Bison, who have been invited to the Eastern Championship every year since 2002, are ranked seventh in the latest CWPA poll and the Eastern Championship field is eight teams.
Bucknell is 2-0 against George Washington, its Saturday-evening opponent, this season. In fact, the Bison have won 12 consecutive games against the Colonials.
