CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) needed to equal her career-best round to finish in the top 10, and she did just that, carding a 4-over-par 75 to earn All-Big South honors for the second time in her career as the PUPS Big South Championship wrapped up Wednesday at Coosaw Creek Country Club. Four of Bucknell's five players, including Loughney, posted her best score of the week in the final round, and the Bison finished up with a 321 team total and placed seventh overall.
Loughney also earned All-Big South honors as a freshman when she tied for fifth place, and last season she just missed an all-conference certificate in a T-11th finish. After opening the week with a 77, which placed her just two shots off the lead, Loughney slipped to 81 in round two before rallying back into the top 10 with an excellent final day.
It was Loughney's fifth top-10 finish in nine starts in 2006-07, and it was her eighth career top-10.
Senior Teri Schlang (Scottsdale, Ariz./Stratton Mountain School) finished her terrific four-year career with an 81 and placed 26th. Deirdre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) shot a final-round 82, her best score of the tournament, as was the 83 turned in by Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg).
Led by individual champion Jill Stupiansky, Birmingham Southern repeated as Big South team champ. Birmingham Southern shot 897 for the tournament to win by 14 strokes over Coastal Carolina (911). Winthrop placed third at 949, followed by Charleston Southern (961), High Point (968), Radford (985), Bucknell (992) and Holy Cross (1173).
Stupiansky shot 76-70-72 to claim a six-shot individual victory.
Despite struggling early in this tournament, Bucknell wrapped up an terrific 2006-07 season that included the program's first-ever tournament victory. The Orange & Blue won the Bison Fall Classic back in October, led by Schlang's first-place performance, and Schlang and Loughney became the first Bucknell players to win Big South Player of the Week awards this season. The Bison tied their 18-hole scoring record with a 314 at the Nittany Lion Invitational in September.
