Bucknell vs. Saint Francis (Pa.) Box Score
BURLINGTON, N.C. - The Bucknell softball team lost a pair of games on the final day of the Elon Classic Sunday as it fell to Saint Francis (Pa.) 6-5 in 10 innings in its first game and then followed that with a 5-1 loss to host Elon. The Bison completed the weekend with a 1-3 record and now stand 2-6 on the season.
Highlighting the day for Bucknell was a home run by Lauren Litts (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) against the Red Flash that was the 18th of her four-year career, breaking the program standard established by Lauren Wible last season. Litts, who has already reached double figures in runs batted in this year, leads the team in round trippers this season with two.
A leadoff single in the top of the first by Erin Curatola (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) followed by a sacrifice bunt from Monica Grinage (Rankin, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and, after a walk by Mary Pavlovich (Johnstown, Pa./Richland), and a single by Litts, a dropped infield fly staked Bucknell to an early 1-0 lead against Elon. However, a one-out double in the top of the second by Sherry Finkel (Morgantown, W. Va./University) knocked Phoenix starter Meredith Gay from the game. After picking up three hits and one run against her in 1.1 innings, the Bison touched reliever Melanie Helterbran for just two hits in the final 5.2 innings.
Christie Wiest (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) started for Bucknell and lasted just two innings as the Phoenix touched her for four hits and three runs. Katie McDonald (York, Pa./West York Area), the staff's ERA leader, replaced her and, after facing just four hitters in the third inning, yielded a pair of runs in the fourth. She gave up a total of three hits and five walks in her 4.0 innings.
Curatola, Grinage, Pavlovich, Litts and Finkel accounted for all five of the Bison hits in the game with Finkel the only one to tally extra bases.
Bucknell returns to action next weekend at the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament. Its first game is Friday, March 9, at 12:30 p.m. against the same Saint Francis (Pa.) squad it faced Sunday. The Bison and Red Flash are slated to meet a total of four times this season.
