CATONSVILLE, Md. - A late RBI single by Erin Curatola (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) to score Lauren Trosch (Reisterstown, Md./McDonough) in the seventh inning was not enough to overcome a two-run deficit as the Bucknell softball team dropped its fourth straight contest to Saint Francis (Pa.), 2-1, in its first game at the three-day UMBC Dawg Pound Classic.
In the second inning, the Red Flash scored the first run of the game when Richele Hall singled to center field, scoring Hilary McNelis. Saint Francis added its second run of the game in the top of the seventh inning when Kara Stroup scored off a fielding error to put the Red Flash up 2-0. After the RBI single by Curatola, the Red Flash recorded the last out of the game as Ashley Carlson (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) grounded out to short.
The Bison stranded seven runners on base, while Saint Francis left just three. Christie Wiest recorded six strikeouts, gave up two hits and one walk as she pitched her first complete game of the season for the Bison.
For the Red Flash, Laura Caldwell collected seven strikeouts.
Mary Pavlovich (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) went 2-for-3, while Curatola went 2-for-4 with one run batted in to lead the Bison, who outhit Saint Francis 7-2 in the contest.
Bucknell will battle Howard on Saturday, March 10, at 11 a.m. with a contest against host UMBC to follow.
