WASHINGTON, D.C. - Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) and Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) scored three goals apiece and the Bucknell women's water polo team held off a late four-goal rally by George Washington to defeat the Colonials 10-8 Saturday morning. The victory halted a four-game losing streak for the Bison, who improved to 12-13 and picked up their first league win of the year.
George Washington (6-16) lost for the sixth time in its last seven games, but not before staging a fourth-quarter comeback against Bucknell. The Bison built an 8-4 lead entering the final period of play, but the Colonials evened the score at 8-8 after tallying the first four scores of the quarter. However, goals by Gins and Jennifer Swoyer (Erie, Pa./McDowell) sealed the victory for Bucknell.
Jensen posted six points in the contest, her second-highest total of the year, as she added three assists to go along with her three goals. Bucknell had assists on each of its 10 scores.
One key to the game for the Bison was a highly successful 4-for-5 showing in man-up situations. They were also 1-for-2 on penalty shots.
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) stopped nine shots in net to pace the Bucknell defense. Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley), who did not score a goal for just the third time in the last 12 games, was strong defensively with a team-high four steals for the second consecutive contest.
The Bison, who are 1-3 in CWPA Southern Division play, wrap up their regular season in two weeks when they host nationally ranked Princeton and this same George Washington team on April 13-14 at Kinney Natatorium.
