LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's water polo team outscored No. 16 Princeton 6-4 in the second half, but the Bison had built too large of a first-half deficit as they lost to the Tigers 12-9 Friday evening at Kinney Natatorium in front of a spirited crowd. Bucknell was led by five combined goals from Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) and Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley).
The Bison yielded four Princeton goals in the first five minutes of play to fall behind 4-0 and never recovered. Back-to-back goals by Rowe and Rozas late in the first quarter brought Bucknell to within two, but the Bison did not get closer than three the rest of the way. Princeton's 9-3 advantage in the opening minute of the third quarter was its largest of the contest.
Rowe led Bucknell with five points on the day as she contributed three assists to go along with her two goals. Rozas found the back of the net three times, including twice after halftime.
Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) failed to net a goal for just the second time in the last nine games, but did equal her career high with seven ejections drawn. The only other time she achieved that figure was in a three-goal loss at Princeton last month.
Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) played the impressive second half in goal for the Bison and totaled seven saves while allowing just the four goals. Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) stopped four shots in the first half.
Bucknell (12-14, 1-4 CWPA Southern Division), which has lost the last six meetings with Princeton by just 12 goals, fell to 0-22 all-time against the Tigers. The contest marked a record 10th against a ranked foe this season for the Bison.
Princeton (16-7, 5-0 CWPA Southern Division) was led by Elyse Colgan, who tallied a team-high four goals, including three in the opening quarter. She now has 65 on the season.
Bucknell wraps up its regular season Saturday at 5 p.m. with a game against George Washington at Kinney Natatorium.
