COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Four different Bison scored goals, but a seven-goal second half for Maryland led the Terrapins to a 9-4 victory over Bucknell in women's water polo action Friday evening. The Bison dropped their fourth consecutive game to fall to 11-13 on the season and 0-3 in CWPA league play. The Terrapins improved to 11-15 and 4-1 in league play.
Bucknell fell to 2-2 this year against Maryland, a squad that had only beaten the Bison once in 13 all-time meetings entering this season.
The Terps used a big second half in which they outscored Bucknell 7-2 to claim the victory. The score was knotted at two apiece at halftime.
Despite the nine goals from Maryland, Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) made 12 saves to push her career total past 900.
One person from each class netted Bucknell's four goals as freshman Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho), sophomore Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley), junior Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) and senior Mallory Sullivan (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Western) each found the back of the net once.
Rozas and Rowe each recorded four steals, while Shana Palencia (Glendale, Calif./Hoover) registered three as the Bison came two short of their season high of 17 that came during a 9-7 overtime win against the same Maryland squad.
Bucknell, which was just 1-for-5 in man-up situations, played without Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep), its second-leading scorer this season.
The Bison, who had been idle for nearly two weeks entering Friday's contest, will take to the pool Saturday at 10 a.m. at George Washington. It is the first meeting of the season for the two league foes.
