LEWISBURG, Pa. - While there is still plenty of business left in 2007 for the Bucknell women's lacrosse team, coach Jess Spadafora has announced that eight student-athletes will join the Bison program in 2007-08. The geographically diverse class features players from seven different states, including Florida, Texas, Ohio and Illinois.
Now in her third season at Bucknell, Spadafora has received significant contributions from first-year players throughout her tenure in Lewisburg. Last season, the team's top three scorers and two starting defenders were freshmen. Of this season's top four scorers, two are rookies and two are sophomores.
Spadafora is hoping for similar contributions from next year's class.
"I am tremendously excited about the Class of 2011," said Spadafora. "I feel that this is indeed an exceptional class of remarkable young women. We are particularly excited about the athleticism, speed and depth of this group. It is a diverse collection of women with a tremendous amount of skill and talent. This group brings a record of success both in the classroom and on the athletic field, and it will help us continue our scholar-athlete tradition within the Bucknell lacrosse program."
Corley Bell, a native of Miami, Fla., attended Gulliver Prep in Miami and The Hun School in Princeton, N.J. She competes in soccer, cross country, track and lacrosse at the prep level.
Julia Braun will graduate this spring from North Rockland (N.Y.) High School, where she is team captain and all-league, all-county and all-section honoree. A U.S. Lacrosse All-Academic selection, Braun participated in the Empire State Games last summer.
Alyssa DeLorenz, a goalie, will become the first Bucknell women's lacrosse player from the state of Texas. A native of Garland and an expected 2007 graduate of Plano East Senior High, DeLorenz was a DII North District All-Star in 2006 and MVP of the district championship game. She helped lead her team to the state semifinals.
Rebecca Devine of Arlington, Va., has helped lead St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School to league championships in both lacrosse and field hockey. Her 2006 ISL championship lacrosse team was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation.
Andrea King will come to Bucknell from Cincinnati, Ohio, where she stars for Indian Hill High School. She is in her fourth year of varsity lacrosse and also eared two varsity letters in volleyball. King is a U.S. Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-American and All-Academic selection, and she has also earned First Team All-Ohio honors in 2005 and 2006. A high-scoring attack, King produced 150 goals in just her first three years at Indian Hill.
Lauren Peyser stars for both the Manhasset (N.Y.) High School team on Long Island and the Long Island Yellow Jackets club team, which captured Galaxy National Championships in 2004 and 2005. Peyser, whose brother Chris plays lacrosse at Princeton, is also an honorable mention all-conference pick in field hockey.
Ashley St. John is in her second year of varsity lacrosse at Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Pa., a school that has won six state titles since 1999. St. John, who will join former Conestoga teammate Katie Hartsock at Bucknell, was named the team's midfield MVP and is a former MVP of the junior varsity team.
Laura Van Schaack is currently a lacrosse co-captain at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill. Last season she was an all-conference selection, a member of the Great Lakes National Team and an Illinois State Scholar-Athlete.
The Bucknell women's lacrosse squad, currently 2-3 on the season, returns to action on Thursday at 4 p.m. against Manhattan at Graham Field.
