ELBERTON, Ga. - The Bucknell women's rowing team opened its 2007 spring training trip by facing Alabama Saturday morning on Lake Russell and won both the varsity eight and second varsity eight races. The Bison, who will spend the next week training in Georgia, also competed against the Crimson Tide in a pair of novice eight races.
Both the varsity eight and second varsity easily posted victories as the varsity eight posted a time of 6 minutes, 54.49 seconds, more than nine seconds ahead of Alabama's 7:03.62. The second varsity eight crossed the line in 7:04.12, nearly 26 seconds faster than the 7:30.01 showing by the Crimson Tide.
Bucknell's varsity eight consisted of coxswain-Jeweliet Yost, stroke-Kelly Henkler, 7-Renee Alemi, 6-Katherine Brewster-Duffy, 5-Christine Drasba, 4-Elizabeth Regan, 3-Page Kannor, 2-Sophe Bird and bow-Betsy Schneider.
The second varsity eight featured coxswain-Katie Kessler, stroke-Olivia Knodt, 7-Whitney Henry, 6-Caitlin Doolin, 5-Jennie Trayes, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Meghan Murphy, 2-Lauren Olsen and bow-Allie Hoch.
The novice eight, which opened and closed the racing day, came in third behind a pair of Alabama boats each time. In the first race, the Bison posted a time of 8:23, while Alabama's two crews finished one-two in 7:36 and 7:54. In the final competition of the morning, the Bison crossed the line in 8:44, while the Crimson Tide again finished first and second in 7:43 and 8:00.
Bucknell's novice eight in the first race was coxswain-Mary Wilson, stroke-Kerry Sullivan, 7-Sarah Germani, 6-Kate Courtien, 5-Diana McCullough, 4-Jen Butler, 3-Sara Baughn, 2-Justine Bailey and bow-Chrissy Friedlander. The lineup remained virtually the same in the second race with only Stefanie Marquette taking Baughn's place in the third seat. Baughn moved to the bow position in place of Friedlander.
"Today we had a really solid start to the season and our training camp," commented Bucknell's 11th-year head coach Stephen Kish. "We are appreciative of Alabama for coming out and giving us good competition."
Bucknell will remain in Georgia for its annual spring training trip throughout the next week. The Bison will return to competitive action on March 24 when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., and the Schuylkill River for the Murphy Cup. They advanced four boats to the finals of the Murphy Cup last season, marking the best showing in program history.
