Bison Softball Loses to Howard and UMBC at UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament

CATONSVILLE, Md. - On Saturday, the Bucknell softball team fell to Howard and UMBC, 8-5 and 5-3, respectively, at the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament. Bucknell fell to 2-9 on the year.
Against Howard, Bucknell allowed three runs in the first inning to fall behind 3-0 early. Howard added a fourth run in the second inning when Brianna Gutierrez drove in Candice Tatum. In the top of the fourth, Bucknell recorded its first run of the contest when Mary Pavlovich (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) doubled to left field, scoring Lauren Trosch (Reistertown, Md./McDonough). Howard answered back with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Fallon Jones scored off a single from Kristina Cordova, while Tatum advanced home on a passed ball.
Bucknell fought back in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Ashley Carlson (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) was walked, scoring Sherry Finkel (Morgantown, W. Va./University). A two-out double by Erin Curatola (Ridge Edge, N.J./River Dell) drove in Monica Grinage (Rankin, Pa./Shady Side Academy), Ashley Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) and Carlson to make the score 7-5. But Howard stopped the Orange and Blue rally by notching another run in the sixth.
In the second game against UMBC, the Retrievers tallied two runs to open the game after an RBI by Melanie Denischuk and a two-out home run by Ashley Gray. With two outs and a runner on third base in the top of the third inning, Kristin Frick (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) singled to left field, which drove in Beans to make the score 2-1. In the fourth, Grinage knocked an RBI single into right field to score Lauren Litts (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) to tie the game at 2-2.
The Bison took their first lead of the game when Frick recorded an RBI single to left field. But UMBC fought back to take the lead, scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth and tallied its second home run of the game in the sixth.
Howard tallied 13 hits, while Bucknell collected eight. Bucknell left nine batters on base. Curatola went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in for Bucknell. Howard's Dale McNeal went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one home run. She also pitched 5.0 innings, while only giving up one run and five hits.
Against UMBC, Christie Wiest pitched her second straight complete. She collected a career-high eight strikeouts and gave up five hits. Frick went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Grinage posted a 2-for-3 showing with one run batted in. Beans went 1-for-3 scoring two runs. UMBC pitcher Krista Kearns tallied four strikeouts and gave up seven hits.
Bucknell will play UMBC on Sunday, March 11, at 11:30 a.m.
