Bucknell Indoor Track and Field to Host Winter Classic on Saturday

LEWISBURG, Pa - This Saturday, Feb. 10, the Bucknell indoor track and field team will host the Bucknell Winter Classic in Gerhard Fieldhouse, which will be the last home meet of the season for the Bison. A select group of women will also be competing at the Sykes-Sabok Challenge Cup on the campus of Penn State University in University Park, Pa., this weekend. Participating in the Bucknell Winter Classic will be Allegheny, College of Misericordia, Duquesne, Essex County, Frostburg State, Indiana (Pa.), Juniata, Lock Haven, Muhlenberg, Penn College, Shenandoah, Towson, Washington and Jefferson, and Washington and Lee.
The Orange and Blue have qualified for a total of 23 events for the ECAC and IC4A Championships on Mar. 3, in Boston, Mass.
On the men's side, Senior Tyler Hoffman (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) has not only qualified fore the IC4A Championships in the 35-lb weight throw, but he broke the school record and topped the Patriot League with a distance of 64 feet, 11 ¼ inches (19.79m). He has won four of six competitions this season. Sophomore Kerry Boyle (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area) has qualified for the 200-, 400-, and 500-meter dashes. He currently holds the school record in the 400 with a time of 47.58 seconds, which he recorded during his first-place showing at the Penn State National Invitational. He is also part of the 4x400 relay team, which finished first at Penn State with a time of 3:15.96.
Senior Matthew Forys (Howell, N.J./Howell) has posted IC4A qualifying marks in the one-mile run, the 5,000, and the distance medley relay. His time of 14:16.26 in the 5,000 ranks his first in the league, 21.33 faster than second place. Junior Brian Mooney (Rochester, Pa./Gates-Chili) has qualified for the 800 and 1,000 with times of 1:54.43 and 2:29.45, respectively. His performance in the 800 is fourth best in the league. Senior Mark Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) became an IC4A qualifier in the 1,000 and the distance medley. He crossed the line fifth at the Penn State National Invitational with a time of 2:27.60, which ranks him fifth best in the league.
Junior Wallace Campbell (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Acad.) earned his spot in the championships by qualifying for the mile and the 3,000. His time in the mile of 4:11.23 lists him fifth in the league. Freshman Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) qualified for the long and triple jump in the Bison Opener back in December. His triple jump length of 48-10 ¾ (14.90m) leads the league, while his distance in the long jump ranks him second.
On the women's side, seniors Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) and Marjorie Grap (Van Etten, N.Y./Spencer-Van Etten) have posted ECAC and NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the pole vault and 20-lb weight throw, respectively. Buczko, who holds the school record in the pole vault, cleared a height of 13-3 ¾ (4.06m) at the Penn State National Invitational, which won her the event and is a league best. Grap threw for a distance of 65-7 ½ (20.00m) at Penn State, which tops the conference and is a school record. She has also qualified for the shot put with a throw of 46-2 (14.07m), which was a new school record as well.
Senior Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) has qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 800, 1,000, mile, and 4x400. Sawko's time of 2:10.77 in the 800 tops the league, while her time of 4:58.11 in the mile puts her second behind teammate junior Erin Cranmer-Hart (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock). Cranmer-Hart ran a time of 4:57.89 last weekend at the Akron Open.
Seniors Catherine Trentacoste (Garden City, N.J./Garden City) and Jenny Stevens (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) have qualified for the ECAC Championships in their respective events. Trentacoste notched a first-place finish in the 55 hurdles with a time 8.25 at the Bucknell Heptagonal, while Stevens finished second at the Akron Open with a time of 17:30.78 in the 5,000, which is the fastest time in the league.
The Sykes-Sabok Challenge Cup will begin on Friday, Feb. 9, at 5:30 p.m., while the Bucknell Winter Classic will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, with the women's long jump.
