WEXFORD, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team collected its first victory of the season after defeating Robert Morris 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Oxford North Athletic Club in Wexford, Pa.
The Orange and Blue picked up a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches, led by the team of sophomore Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and freshman Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), who took down Kali Delore and Libby Shaw, 8-3.
The freshman pair of Kirstyn Sotak (Beechwood, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) and Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) beat Kate Kravitz and Katie Skopinski, 8-5, in the No. 2 spot, while junior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) and sophomore Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown High School) defeated Hillary Newman and Shelby Schmidt, 8-0 in No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Gamboa beat Delore, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 1 spot, while Globerman dominated Shaw in No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0. At the No. 3 spot, Calcaterra was victorious over Kravitz, 6-0, 6-2. Sotak defeated Skopinski, 6-3, 6-0, in No. 4 singles.
Sophomore JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park High School) recorded the Bison's sixth point of the match after winning 6-4, 6-0, in No. 4 singles, while Weissend completed the Bucknell shutout with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Schmidt, in the No. 6 spot.
"We played a more aggressive match today," said Bucknell head tennis coach Rebecca Helt. "We stayed focused on our game plan, which was to win points at the net. The players are taking away something positive from every match and making better decisions each time they take the court."
The Bucknell women's tennis squad, which now owns a 1-1 record, will play Duquesne on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Oxford Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa. The match is slated to start at 3 p.m.
