UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Bucknell women's lacrosse squad dropped its second straight game of the season to No. 14 Penn State, 19-6, Wednesday night at Holuba Hall. Sophomore Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) collected three goals to pace the Bison, but it wasn't enough to overcome the strong start by the Lions. The Bison fell to 0-2 on the season, while Penn State improved to 2-0.
The Lions got on the scoreboard first when Jessi Lieb connected with Marisa Lozano to put Penn State up 1-0 just 3:31 into the contest. The Orange and Blue responded at the 24:02 mark when Buechel scored an unassisted goal, her fourth tally of the season, to tie the score up at 1-1. Penn State would answer by scoring the next 10 goals. At the half, the Lions led 11-1. Penn State outshot Bucknell 25-4 and led in draw controls, 10-3 in the first half.
In the second stanza, sophomore Sarah Collins (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) broke the Lions goal streak off a free position shot with 28:12 left to make the score 11-2. Also scoring in the half were sophomore Casen Van Langen (Rancho Sante Fe, Calif/Torry Pines) and freshman Chelsea Peters (Cold Springs Harbor, N.Y./Cold Springs Harbor). Buechel added two more goals to bring her season total to a team-high six.
On defense, freshman goalie Katie Hartsock (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) made eight saves, while senior Lauren Kremer (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) caused two turnovers for the Bison.
Bucknell was outshot by Penn State 35-19 and collected 12 draw controls 15 for the Lions. Lindsey Dutch led Penn State with three goals while Karen Long tallied three assists.
The Bison will host Robert Morris in their home opener on Saturday, March 3, at Graham Field. The game will begin at 3 p.m.
