LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team's first home series of 2007, slated for this Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 3-4, against Cornell, has been relocated to La Salle University's Hank DeVincent Field in Philadelphia, Pa., due to the recent storms that have blanketed Depew Field with snow. As scheduled, the squads will play a pair of doubleheaders, each slated to begin at noon.
The Bison (0-4) are 20-23 all time against the Big Red (0-0) since the teams first met in 1906. Last season, the Orange and Blue dropped its first contest to Cornell, 6-4, but rebounded by winning the next three games by the scores of 10-4, 3-1 and 9-6 to take the series, 3-1.
Through four games so far this year, senior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) and junior Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) are tied with five hits apiece to lead Bucknell. Each has an RBI to his credit, while Gryskevicz also belted a double and a home run in the opening week of the season. Junior Shawn Hirsch (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) holds a .375 batting average to pace the squad's starters as he is 3-for-8 at the dish.
Two members of the Orange and Blue's regular rotation, senior Nathan Mittag (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) and junior Mathew Wilson (Toronto, Ontario/Northern S.S.), hold the lowest ERA among Bison pitchers with more than an inning of work on the year. Both are 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA through one start, while Wilson has fanned five batters.
Cornell, who will be playing its first contests of the season this weekend, returns 15 letterwinners, including six starting position players from 2006. Last year, the Big Red finished 10-29 with a 6-14 record in the Ivy League.
Bucknell is slated to see action in three more home contests, Mar. 9-10, versus Niagara, before heading south to Bradenton, Fla., for the squad's annual spring break trip on Mar. 12-17.
