CATONSVILLE, Md. -- Bonnie Buechel scored three goals, but it wasn't enough to overcome UMBC's hot start in the Retrievers' 13-5 women's lacrosse victory over Bucknell Friday night at UMBC Stadium.
Sarah Collins and Chelsea Peters also scored for the Bison in their season opener. Ali Levendusky had four goals and Kelly Fahey three for the Retrievers, who improved to 2-1 on the season.
UMBC jumped out of the gates quickly in this one, scoring six times in the first 5:35 of the contest. Amanda Gable scored just 32 seconds into the game, and Levandusky posted three tallies in that 6-0 run.
Bucknell's defense gained solid footing after the opening flurry, keeping UMBC off the board for the rest of the half. The Bison got on the board for the first time with 10:06 left in the first half, when the freshman Peters notched her first career goal on an 8-meter shot.
Less than a minute later Collins, the team's leading scorer last season, tallied to make it a 6-2 game at the half.
UMBC scored the first four goals of the second stanza to go up 10-2, then the teams split the final six of the night, with each of Bucknell's three goals coming from Buechel, who equaled her personal best with the three scores.
UMBC outshot Bucknell 31-22, but the key stat was draw controls, where the Retrievers claimed 18 of 20.
In her first collegiate appearance, freshman goalie Katie Hartsock made six saves. Defensively, the Bison pressured UMBC into 31 turnovers. Lauren Deitrich led the way with three caused turnovers.
The Bison will have another tough test in their next outing on Wednesday night, when they visit 14th-ranked Penn State in State College.
