Bucknell Swimming And Diving Travels To Navy For Quad Meet This Weekend

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Coming off a trip to Duquesne last weekend, the Bucknell swimming and diving squads will travel again this Saturday, Nov. 10, as the squads will head to Annapolis, Md., for a Patriot League quad meet. The Bison will be in action against Navy, Lafayette and American, beginning at noon.

Against Navy, Lafayette and American
- On the Men's side, the Bison have an 0-3-0 record all-time against American and are 0-4-0 in dual meets against Navy. Both series began in 2003. Against Lafayette, Bucknell holds a 43-4-0 series advantage, having not dropped a meet versus the Leopards since 1993-94.
- The Bison women are 3-1-0 in their dual-meet history against American, 5-5-0 versus Navy and 25-2-2 against Lafayette. Bucknell and American first matched up in 1984-85, while the series with the Mids began in 1992-93 and the Bison first took on the Leopards in 1977-78.
New Top-10 Marks Set
- Against the UMBC in her first collegiate meet, freshman Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) broke into Bucknell's record book as she posted a time of 24.52 in the 50 free to win the event and move into 10th in program history. Then at Duquesne on Nov. 3, she entered the Bison top-10 for the 100 free, recording a time of 52.82, good for fifth on the list.
On the Bison Men So Far in 2007

- The Bison have competed twice at home, thus far, and once on the road, opening with a non-scored dual against UMBC and an intrasquad Blue vs. Orange meet on Oct. 27. On Nov. 3, Bucknell picked up a 151-100 victory at Duquesne.
- Sophomore Luke Trafton (Bath, Maine/Morse), sophomore Ben Leboza (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) and senior John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) each won two events, helping the Bison to the win over Duquesne. Bucknell was victorious in the first 11 events in the meet before competing exhibition in the final three. Trafton took the top spot in both the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 200 fly with times of nine minutes, 57.71 seconds, and 2:00.77, respectively, while also earning a runner-up finish in the 500 free (4:53.49). Leboza's wins came in the 200 free, with a time of 1:45.75, and in the 500 free as he reached the wall in 5:53.34. Peterman placed first in the 50 free in 21.90 and posted the fastest time in the 100 free (48.34). Freshman Gonzalo DeLeon (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) won the 200 back with a time of 1:57.49, followed by sophomore David Iselin (Potomac, Md./Churchill) in second with a time of 1:59.06. The duo was also a part of a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 back, in second (55.20) and third (55.23), respectively, following behind teammate junior Mark Kawczenski's (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) first-place mark of 53.70.
- Senior Joseph Metcalf (Knoxville, Tenn./Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.) collected a first-place finish in the 200 breast with a time of 2:13.31 and also scored in the 100 breast with a time of 1:01.82, which was good for third. His classmate Bradford Bennett (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) took first in the 100 breast, touching the wall in 59.44.
- Other top finishers for the Orange and Blue included senior Theo Leriotis (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional Sr. High) who placed third in the 1,000 free (10:17.00) and held the top time as an exhibition swimmer in the 200 IM (2:03.17). Freshman Michael Volpe (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) who captured second in the 200 fly (2:02.07) and posted the second-fastest time in the 100 fly as an exhibitioner (54.38).
- The Bison opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay as the squad of Kawczenski, Bennett, senior Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Peterman combined for a time of 1:36.50. Swimming exhibition in the 200 free relay, Peterman, Kawczenski, sophomore Daniel Fletcher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) and Steadman recorded the fastest time in that event, as well, 1:27.82.
- Other top Bison performances included Volpe's runner-up showing in the 100 fly (53.42) and third-place finish in the 50 fly (23.35), senior Bradford Bennett's (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) second-place time of 27.67 in the 50 breast and junior Steven Schmaltz's (Waverly, Pa./Abington Heights) score of 213.97 in one-meter diving, good for second in the event.
On the Bison Women So Far in 2007

- After opening the season with a non-scored dual against UMBC on Oct. 6, in Kinney Natatorium. Bucknell held its annual Blue vs. Orange meet on Oct. 27. The Blue squad came away with a narrow 126-123 victory.
- This past Saturday, Nov. 3, Bucknell held a narrow two-point advantage with two events to go in its dual meet at Duquesne, however, the Bison could not hold on, falling 138-124 to the Dukes. The 200 medley relay squad of sophomore Courtney Warren (Montour Falls, N.Y./Watkins Glen), junior Kelly Morris (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen), Goebel and sophomore Megan Mongan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) started out the meet on a high note for the Orange and Blue, picking up a victory with a time of one minute, 50.37 seconds. The Dukes promptly tied the score at 18 with nine points in the 1,000 free, although the Bison kept pace with senior Kristen Skroski (North Haven, Conn./Hopkins) claiming the runner-up spot (10:43.21) and freshman Katie John taking third in 11:00.52. Mongan led Bucknell's contingent in the 200 free, finishing second in the event with a time of 1:58.14 as the Orange and Blue claimed three of the five scoring places, but headed into the 100 back trailing by one at 28-27. A win by sophomore Abigail Atkinson (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) in the 100 back (1:01.13) helped the Bison regain the lead, while freshman Macey Keath (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and Morris followed up with a one-two sweep in the 100 breast, with times of 1:08.86 and 1:09.68, respectively, to stretch the advantage to 54-39. Duquesne then cut its deficit to six with 14 points in the 200 fly and went back on top, 66-65, after the running of the 50 free. Goebel was Bucknell's top finisher in the 50 free (24.75) and the 100 free (52.82), taking second in both events to keep the Bison within striking distance. Atkinson posted a runner-up showing in the 200 back (2:09.82) and Keath and Morris went one-two in the 200 breast. Keath claimed first with a time of 2:29.54 and Morris came in second with a time of 2:31.51 as Bucknell managed to tie the score at 94. Skroski placed second in the 500 free, recording a time of 5:17.03 to lead the Bison in that event, while a win by Goebel in the 100 fly moved the Orange and Blue in front, 114-112. However, Bucknell came up short in the final two events. Mongan was the top scorer for the squad in the 200 IM (second, 2:11.79) and the 200 free relay team of junior Alexandra Lovallo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), Skroski, Warren and junior Susan Horstmann (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) finished second in 1:41.53.

- Bucknell will be back in action at home next Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17-18, hosting the two-day Bucknell Trials/Finals Invitational. Trials will begin each day at 10 a.m., while finals will commence at 5 p.m.
