Bucknell in the Patriot League Tournament:
With a 6-0 win over Laffayette on Oct. 28, the Bison secured a spot in the Patriot League Tournament for a third consecutive year, the 12th time in the program's 18 seasons. It also marked the first time the Orange and Blue have qualified for the postseason three years in a row since the team went to seven straight tournaments from 1991 to 1997. A 1-1 draw versus American on Nov. 3 gave Bucknell its second straight Patriot League regular season title and the right to host the league tournament as the No. 1 seed for a second consecutive year. In 2006, the Bison shared the regular season crown with Navy, but earned the No. 1 seed by defeating the then-No. 14 Mids, 2-1, in the final match of the regular season. Bucknell has played host to the PL Tournament three times, 1995, 2006 and 2007, and currently have a 0-2-0 all-time record in the postseason as the No. 1 seed. Overall, the Bison are 3-9-1 all-time in the Patriot League Tournament, however, have come away with the league title in two of its last three trips to the postseason. In 2001, Bucknell won its PL tournament games by 2-1 margins over American and Navy on the way to its first championship. Most recently in 2005, the Bison squad became the first No. 4 seed to win a Patriot League championship, advancing past Lehigh, 6-5, on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 draw, and defeating Army, 3-1, in the final.
About the Series with Army:
Since the series began in 1991, Army holds a 13-9-1 advantage over the Bison. Bucknell has won the last three meetings, 2-1 earlier this year in West Point, N.Y., 1-0, in the regular season in Lewisburg in 2006, and 3-1 in the Patriot League championship match in 2005 at Lehigh. The Black Knights last defeated the Bison in West Point, N.Y. on Oct. 21, 2005, by the score of 2-1. Gentile scored Bucknell's only goal in the 2-1 setback and went on to net the deciding tally in the Patriot League championship match, while recording an assist in last year's meeting with Army. Dervarics has one career assist against the Black Knights as well, which came in the league championship. This season on Oct. 14, Gentile had a hand in both goals, in the come-from-behind win over Army. Capitalizing on a free kick opportunity 10:08 into the match, Caroline Miller sent the ball into the box for Sarah Goss who knocked it home to give the Black Knights a 1-0 advantage. Then, at 21:04, Gentile netted the equalizer, connecting with a feed from sophomore Molly Linhart at close range. Freshman Kelliann Doherty later scored the game-winner in the 30th minute, driving the ball past Black Knights' goalkeeper Alex Lostetter off a rebound. Gentile, who took the initial shot, picked up the assist on the play. That would be all the Bison would need as Sutton held Army off the board the rest of the way, making six saves in the second half for a total of seven in the contest.
Success Under Head Coach Ben Landis:
Since Ben Landis became the head coach of the Bison in 2005, the squad has captured two PL regular season championships and a league tournament title, which came in 2005. Under his direction, Bucknell is 33-21-3 for a winning percentage of .588, and 15-5-1 in Patriot League matches (.738). During his tenure the following program milestones have been achieved:
- Matched program record for wins (12 in 2006).
- Equaled program record for Patriot League victories (6 in 2006).
- Tied program mark for shutouts (5 in 2006 and 2007).
- Best winning percentage in program history (.694 in 2006).
- Team goals-against average record broken (0.99 in 2006).
- Broke school records for winning (5) and unbeaten (6) streaks with seven straight victories in 2006.
- First three consecutive above-.500 seasons since 1994-96 (2005-07).
- First three consecutive season with 10 wins or more (2005-07).
- First SoccerBuzz and NSCAA Mid-Atlantic regional rankings (2006, ranked again in 2007). 14 All-Patriot League accolades, four all-region selections, one Patriot League Tournament MVP and one Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year.
Bucknell Career Records Update:
Senior Krista Lee Gentile is third in career points (83), third in career goals (34), fourth in career assists (15) and needs two to move into third in that category. With 14 career game-winning goals, Gentile is one shy of matching Gibbons' record (15). Junior Jennifer Dervarics is sixth in career points (59, needs eight to pass Jennifer Margolis (5th)), is seventh in career goals (23, needs four to pass Katie McElligott) and is seventh in career assists (13, needs two to pass Tara Utchel and Joanne Crane).
Dervarics' Single Game Milestones:
Jennifer Dervarics' seven-point game against Holy Cross marked her first career hat trick and tied the third-highest single game points total in program history. Only two players (Lisa Gibbons and Kerry McDonnell) have posted more in a single contest, Gibbons holding the record at nine (4g, 1a). Dervarics became the sixth player in school history to record a hat trick, as well. Dervarics' three assists versus Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sept. 12 matched the second-highest single-game total in program history. The only other Bison to ever notch three or more assists in a match was Gibbons as she totaled three against Scranton in 1994 and set the Bucknell record in the same season with four against Lycoming.
Recapping an Outstanding Patriot League Career:
In 28 career regular season games against Patriot League opponents, senior Krista Lee Gentile finished with 17 goals and eight assists for 42 points.
Starting out Strong:
So far in 2007, the Bison have outscored their opponents, 20-3 in the first half. Bucknell is 9-3-1 in games where the squad has scored first. However, the lone victory on the year where the Bison did not net the first tally in the contest was their 2-1 win at Army. After the Black Knights scored in the 11th minute, the Bison came from behind with two goals before the intermission, which secured the win for the Orange and Blue.
Bison Place Six on All-League Teams:
Six members of the Bucknell women's soccer team were honored with All-Patriot League first- and second-team selections, the Patriot League announced this past Wednesday. Junior forward Jennifer Dervarics, freshman midfielder Kelliann Doherty, junior defender Nicole Marotta and sophomore goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton earned spots on the first team, as voted on by the Patriot League head women's soccer coaches, while senior forward Krista Lee Gentile and sophomore defender Lauren Stoller collected second-team accolades. Dervarics picks up her second all-league award after being named to the second team as a sophomore in 2006. With her accolade, Doherty became the first Bison freshman to be named to the All-Patriot League first team since Kristie Simon in 2000. Marotta earns her second selection of her career after being recognized as an all-league first-team honoree and the Patriot League Co-Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2006. Sutton, the first goalkeeper in program history to earn a first-team all-league nod, collected her first all-league award of her career. Gentile, just the second member of the Orange and Blue all-time to earn a spot on the all-league squad in each of her four seasons, has garnered three second-team accolades after being named to the first team as a junior in 2006. Stoller is a second-team all-league recipient for a second straight year.
Two Bucknell Women's Soccer Players Recognized for Success in the Classroom:
Sophomore midfielder Chelsea Brinkman and sophomore defender Lauren Stoller were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II University Division Women's Soccer Second Team, it was announced on Nov. 1. The accolades raise the count to nine academic all-district selections all-time for the Bison women's soccer program, including 2007 graduate Shannon Curd, who earned Academic All-America recognition as a senior last year. Brinkman and Stoller are just the second and third members of the Orange and Blue to receive the award as sophomores. Kerry Fitz-Patrick `06 was the only prior second-year player to earn a spot on the all-district squad, doing so in 2003. Brinkman holds a 3.83 grade-point average as a biology major with a minor in Spanish, while Stoller carries a 3.71 GPA as a psychology major.
