PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Bucknell swimming and diving team held a narrow two-point advantage with two events to go in its dual meet against Duquesne, however, the Bison could not hold on, falling 138-124 to the Dukes on Saturday afternoon. Following the loss, Bucknell is now 0-1 on the season.
The 200 medley relay squad of sophomore Courtney Warren (Montour Falls, N.Y./Watkins Glen), junior Kelly Morris (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen), freshman Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and sophomore Megan Mongan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) started out the meet on a high note for the Orange and Blue, picking up a victory with a time of one minute, 50.37 seconds.
The Dukes promptly tied the score at 18 with nine points in the 1,000 free, although the Bison kept pace with senior Kristen Skroski (North Haven, Conn./Hopkins) claiming the runner-up spot (10:43.21) and freshman Katie John (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) taking third in 11:00.52.
Mongan led Bucknell's contingent in the 200 free, finishing second in the event with a time of 1:58.14 as the Orange and Blue claimed three of the five scoring places, but headed into the 100 back trailing by one at 28-27.
A win by sophomore Abigail Atkinson (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) in the 100 back (1:01.13) helped the Bison regain the lead, while freshman Macey Keath (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and Morris followed up with a one-two sweep in the 100 breast, with times of 1:08.86 and 1:09.68, respectively, to stretch the advantage to 54-39.
Duquesne then cut its deficit to six with 14 points in the 200 fly and went back on top, 66-65, after the running of the 50 free. Goebel was Bucknell's top finisher in the 50 free (24.75) and the 100 free (52.82), taking second in both events to keep the Bison within striking distance.
Atkinson posted a runner-up showing in the 200 back (2:09.82) and Keath and Morris went one-two in the 200 breast. Keath claimed first with a time of 2:29.54 and Morris came in second with a time of 2:31.51 as Bucknell managed to tie the score at 94.
Skroski placed second in the 500 free, recording a time of 5:17.03 to lead the Bison in that event, while a win by Goebel in the 100 fly moved the Orange and Blue in front, 114-112.
However, Bucknell came up short in the final two events. Mongan was the top scorer for the squad in the 200 IM (second, 2:11.79) and the 200 free relay team of junior Alexandra Lovallo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), Skroski, Warren and junior Susan Horstmann (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) finished second in 1:41.53.
The Bison will next travel to Annapolis, Md., on Saturday, Nov. 10, for a quad meet against Patriot League foes Navy, Lafayette and American, which is scheduled to begin at noon.
