ANNAPOLIS, Md. - With a berth in the Eastern Championship on the line, the No. 17 Bucknell men's water polo team was unable to overcome a 3-0 first-quarter deficit and lost to George Washington 6-4 at the Southern Championships Saturday night. The fifth-seeded Colonials claimed first place in Bracket B and will finish no lower than third at the Southern Championships. The second-seeded Bison must win a pair of games on Sunday to finish in the top four and qualify for the Eastern Championship for an eighth consecutive year.
To finish fourth in the 10-team field and advance to the Eastern Championship, Bucknell must beat the loser of Saturday night's Johns Hopkins-Mercyhurst game on Sunday morning at 10:15 a.m. The Bison must then turn around and beat Princeton at 2 p.m. for a third time this season to secure an Eastern Championship berth.
Bucknell, which defeated Washington & Jefferson 17-3 earlier in the day, fell behind 3-0 in the first quarter and never evened the score as the Colonials tacked on an additional goal each quarter.
Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) led the Bison with two goals, while Richie Hyden (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) and Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) each added one. Rechel, who also had two assists in the contest, now has 60 goals this season.
Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) made nine saves in goal for the Bison as he increased his season total to a team-high 95.
Bucknell (16-12), which was 5-for-5 in extra-man situations earlier in the day against the Presidents, was 0-for-7 in those situations against George Washington.
The Bison entered Saturday night's game having defeated the Colonials in both meetings this season, but each was by just one goal.
Bucknell's loss to George Washington was just its third to an unranked foe this season.
The Bison have had success this season against Sunday's potential opponents. They are 1-0 against Mercyhurst, 2-0 opposite Johns Hopkins and 2-1 versus Princeton in 2007.
