ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Freshman Richie Hyden (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) scored a season-high five goals and the Bucknell men's water polo team used an eight-goal first half to easily defeat Mercyhurst 15-7 Sunday morning at the Southern Championships. The win helped the Bison advance on to Sunday afternoon's fourth-place game against Princeton. The winner of that contest earns the final berth in the Eastern Championship.
Needing a win to stay alive for a top-four finish in the 10-team field, Bucknell streaked out to an 8-4 halftime advantage, and extended the lead to 11-5 after the third quarter. A total of eight Bison registered goals. Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) and Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) joined Hyden with multiple goals as Roslyn totaled three and Masterson two.
In addition to his five goals, Hyden was strong on the defensive end with three steals. It was the fourth time this season he has recorded at least three steals. Josh Sunday (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) posted a team-high four steals, while Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) added a pair.
Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) made his seventh consecutive start in goal and recorded five saves, pushing his season total to 100. Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) relieved him in the fourth quarter and stopped three Lakers shots.
With the win, Bucknell improved to 17-12 this season, equaling the 2004 team for the second-most victories during head coach John Zeigler's nine years.
The Bison will now play Princeton at 2 p.m. for the right to go to the Eastern Championship, which will be held at Harvard in two weeks. Bucknell, which utilized its bench for significant minutes against Mercyhurst, has advanced to the Eastern Championship each of the last seven years. In fact, the Bison, who are seeded second at the Southern Championships, have not finished lower than fourth at Southerns since 1999. Bucknell was 2-1 against fourth-seeded Princeton during the regular season.
