ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Behind a season-high 29 steals, the No. 17 Bucknell men's water polo team got off to a good start at the Southern Championships Saturday morning as it easily defeated Washington & Jefferson 17-3. The Bison, seeded second in the 10-team field, opened up a 13-0 halftime lead over the Presidents, who are seeded eighth.
Nick Doyle (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) and Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) paced the Bucknell defense with five steals apiece, while Richie Hyden (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) and Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) totaled four each. Overall, 11 different Bison recorded at least one steal. With their five steals, Doyle and Kalter surpassed the most by a Bucknell player this season. The previous high was four, which had been accomplished 11 times.
Thanks to the strong defense in front of them, the Bison trio of goalies needed to make just two saves as they yielded only three goals, equaling the second-lowest figure of the year. Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miamonte) and Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville), who also saw some playing time outside of goal, split time in the first half, while Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) played the entire second half. Belenky made the only two saves in the contest.
Bucknell was efficient on the offensive end, scoring 17 goals on 30 shots and going 5-for-5 in extra-man situations. Lee Anderson (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) led 11 Bison goal scorers with a career-high four goals. Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) and Lampley added two goals apiece. Roslyn, who has 31 goals this season, is just one shy of equaling his career high.
Bucknell was especially strong early in the first half as it outscored Washington & Jefferson 9-0 in the first quarter.
With a 16-11 record this season, the Bison are now just one win shy of equaling the second-most wins during head coach John Zeigler's nine-year tenure.
Bucknell will be back in action Saturday evening at 7 p.m. against division rival George Washington. With a win, the Bison will guarantee a top-four finish at the Southern Championships and a berth into the Eastern Championship. Bucknell, which has qualified for the Eastern Championship seven straight years, was 2-0 against the Colonials during the regular season.
