LEWISBURG, Pa. - A valiant second-half comeback fell short for the No. 14 Bucknell men's water polo team Sunday morning at Kinney Natatorium as the Bison lost a CWPA league game 10-5 to No. 13 Navy. It was the second consecutive loss for Bucknell, which fell to 11-4 on the season. The Bison will wrap up their four-game weekend with a 5 p.m. contest against No. 11 St. Francis (N.Y.) at 5 p.m. Sunday.
After a lackluster first half in which it fell behind 7-1, Bucknell tallied three goals in a two-minute span in the opening minutes of the second half. However, Aaron Recko ended the Bison momentum and put the Mids back up by five goals (9-4) with back-to-back scores.
The Bison were led by two goals from Richie Hyden (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich), while Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin), Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) netted one apiece. Bucknell did struggle scoring goals in man-up situations, converting just once in nine chances.
Despite Navy connecting on 10 of 23 shot attempts, Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) made 10 saves in goal for the Bison.
Recko paced the Mids with four goals, while Mike Mulvey tallied three. Goalie George Naughton stopped 14 shots, including nine in the first half.
Having lost two games in a row for the first time this season, Bucknell will try to end that streak at 5 p.m. Sunday evening. The Bison take on No. 11 St. Francis (N.Y.) in a non-league contest. Live video of the game will be broadcast online through BucknellBison.com and SportsJuice.com.
