PRINCETON, N.J. - Looking to extend its winning streak over Princeton to three games for the first time since 1990, the Bucknell men's water polo team came up just short as it lost to the No. 18 Tigers 5-4 Saturday evening in DeNunzio Pool. The Bison, ranked 14th nationally, ended up splitting their two games Saturday, having beaten Queens 10-3 earlier in the morning.
Bucknell had defeated Princeton twice at Kinney Natatorium last month and played the Tigers evenly through the first half as the two teams were tied 3-3 at halftime. However, Princeton took a 5-3 third-quarter advantage. The Bison drew to within 5-4 on a goal by Josh Sunday (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) with just over a minute remaining. They had possession of the ball with a chance to tie in the final minute, but Princeton registered a steal to clinch the victory.
Sunday led Bucknell, which had its lowest-scoring game of the season, with two goals, while Gabriel Heiber (Aventura, Fla./Miami Beach) and Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) each added one. Richie Hyden (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) tallied three assists for the second consecutive outing against Princeton.
After having the morning game off, Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) tallied two saves in goal for the Bison.
Bucknell is now 11-3 on the season, and 3-1 in CWPA Southern Division play. Princeton improved to 10-5 overall and 2-3 in league play.
The Bison will conclude their four-game weekend with two home contests on Sunday. They will host No. 13 Navy at 10 a.m. at Kinney Natatorium. Then, at 5 p.m., they will face No. 11 St. Francis in a non-league game. Live internet video of that match will be available through BucknellBison.com and SportsJuice.com. Coverage will begin at 4:50 p.m.
