PRINCETON, N.J. - The Bucknell men's water polo team got its four-game weekend slate off to a good start on Saturday morning as it defeated Queens by a 10-3 score at DeNunzio Pool. The No. 14-ranked Bison, who improved to 11-2 on the season and won their second straight game, were led by a career-high four goals from sophomore Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute).
Making his first career start, Stupp was one of six Bucknell players to tally goals against the Knights. Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) registered a pair of scores, while Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), Lee Anderson (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), Andrew Nelson (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) and Nick Doyle (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) each found the back of the net once.
Bucknell head coach John Zeigler, who picked up the 125th win of his career, went with a seldom-used starting lineup of Coghlan, Kalter, Peter O'Keefe (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter), Stupp, Nelson and Doyle. Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) earned the start in goal.
Donahue made six saves, his second-highest total of the year. He also recorded a pair of steals and an assist as he played the whole game.
O'Keefe, a senior, was strong on the defensive end in front of Donahue, picking up a career-high four steals, equaling the amount of thefts he had coming into this year.
The win over Queens was the second of the season against the Knights for the Bison. Bucknell defeated them 17-3 at the season-opening Navy Labor Day Open. The Bison have not lost to Queens since 2003.
Bucknell will return to the pool Saturday evening at 5 p.m. when they take on No. 18 Princeton in a key CWPA Southern Division game. The Bison are 2-0 against the Tigers this year with both victories coming at Kinney Natatorium.
