LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Ross Liberati (Warwick, Md./Tower Hill) headed in his first career goal early in the second half, but the Bucknell men's soccer team could only earn a 1-1 tie with Holy Cross Saturday afternoon at Varsity Soccer Field. With the tie, the Bison extended their unbeaten streak to six games.
Liberati put Bucknell (4-3-4, 1-0-0 PL) up 1-0 at the 47:50 mark when he took a corner kick from Alex Russo (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) and headed the ball into the net for his first career score. Russo's kick went across the field from the right corner to find Liberati position near the left post. It was Russo's second assist of the season.
The Bison lead held up until the 62nd minute when the Crusaders tied the game on a corner kick of their own. Jon Werth sneaked the ball into the net directly off the corner kick. The ball sailed over Bison goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach's (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) hands as he jumped from a pack of people positioned around him.
Less than six minutes later the complexion of the game changed as Jerry Dickinson picked up a red card for Holy Cross (4-3-2, 0-0-2), which was also whistled for four yellows.
The Crusaders were able to hold the Bison without a goal, despite playing down one player for the final 22:40 of regulation and both 10-minute overtime periods. The last time Holy Cross played in Lewisburg, in 2005, Bucknell was forced to play the final 52 minutes down one player due to a red card. The Bison won that contest 2-0.
Kuterbach made six saves in goal, his second-highest total of the year, as Holy Cross fired 19 shots. Thomas Booth, the Crusaders' goalie, made two saves as Bucknell attempted 12 shots.
Nathan LaGrave (Okinawa, Japan/Kadena) fired three of those shots for the Bison and came very close to netting his first goal of the year each time. He hit the right post, had the ball skip in front of the net on a shot from just outside the right post, and had a header sail just over the crossbar in the opening minutes of overtime.
In addition to picking up five of the game's six cards, Holy Cross committed 15 fouls, including 11 in the second half. Bucknell had just nine fouls.
The Bison concluded a stretch of four games at home in a five-game span and will now go on the road for their next two contests. They will play at Army next Saturday, Oct. 13, and then travel to Colgate on Sunday, Oct. 21.
