Bucknell Women's Soccer Returns Home with Matches Against Lehigh and Lafayette This Weekend

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Following a stellar start to its Patriot League campaign, the Bucknell women's soccer team will look to secure a spot in the postseason this weekend as it will take on Lehigh and Lafayette at home on Varsity Soccer Field. The Bison, who are currently in first place in the league standings with a record of 4-0-0 in the PL, 8-6-0 overall, will face the Mountain Hawks at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, and the Leopards at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28.

Bison Bits
- For Friday's match against Lehigh, fans are encouraged wear orange in support of the Bison.
- A live video broadcast of the contest against the Mountain Hawks will be available for a subscription fee though BucknellBison.com.
- On Sunday, the Bison will honor the four members of the squad who are part of the Class of 2008 with a Senior Day ceremony prior to kickoff.
About the Series with Lehigh
- Bucknell holds a 9-6-2 advantage in its series against the Mountain Hawks, which began in 1991. However, the Bison have not picked up a victory against Lehigh since 2003, when the Orange and Blue collected a 1-0 win in Lewisburg.
- The Mountain Hawks have posted two consecutive 1-0 decisions over Bucknell during regular season play.
- The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in the 2005 Patriot League semifinal before the Bison upset No. 1-seeded Lehigh, 6-5, in penalty kicks to advance to the championship match.
- Senior Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) scored Bucknell's lone goal in the squad's 2-1 loss to the Mountain Hawks as a freshman in 2004.
Scouting the Lehigh Mountain Hawks
- Lehigh is currently 6-6-3 overall, 1-2-1 in the Patriot League, and is fifth in the league standings with four points.
- Liz Carlos leads the Mountain Hawks in scoring with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Melissa Montalvo follows with three goals and three assists for nine points.
- Lauren Mains and Julie Kafka have split time in goal. Mains has played 725 minutes, 50 seconds, over 15 games and has allowed seven goals for a goals-against average of 0.87 while making 35 saves for a .833 save percentage. Kafka has played 675 minutes and has let up nine goals for a 1.20 goals-against average. She holds a .824 save percentage with 42 saves on the year.
About the Series with Lafayette
- Bucknell holds a 10-6-1 advantage all-time against the Leopards since the teams first met in 1990.
- The Bison have not allowed a goal by Lafayette since Sept. 28, 2002, when the Leopards recorded a 2-0 victory in Lewisburg. Since then, Bucknell is 3-0-1 against Lafayette, outscoring the Leopards 6-0 in those contests.
- Gentile notched her first goal in Patriot League play against Lafayette in 2004, finishing with two tallies in the 3-0 victory. So far in her career, she has recorded 15 goals and eight assists for 38 points against league foes, including seven game-winners.
Scouting the Lafayette Leopards
- Prior to playing Friday evening at Colgate, Lafayette is 3-12-0 on the year with a 0-4-0 record in Patriot League matches to sit eighth in the league standings with zero points.
- Caroline Tuttle and Kelly Koreyva have provided the bulk of the offense for the Leopards as the pair has 11 of the squad's 13 goals. Tuttle leads the way with five goals and three assists for 13 points. Koreyva follows with six goals for 12 points.
Recapping the Victory over Colgate
- Junior Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) scored twice, helping Bucknell to a 3-1 victory at Colgate on Oct. 20, which marked the first time the Bison had won in Hamilton, N.Y., in program history. Dervarics put the Bison on the board first as she collected a through ball from Gentile and slipped it into the right side of the Raiders' goal at the 30:24 mark. After trailing 1-0 heading into the intermission, Colgate answered back at 51:13 as Franny Iacuzzi netted an unassisted tally to level the score at one. Then in the 59th minute, Dervarics regained the lead for the Orange and Blue when she blasted a shot from the right corner of the box, off the far left post and into the goal for her team-leading ninth tally of the season. Now with 23 points on the year, Dervarics has surpassed her career highs for both goals and points in a single season. She also improved her rankings in Bucknell's record book as she is now tied for seventh in both career points (54) and career goals (21). Freshman Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) later stretched the Bison advantage to 3-1 with her sixth of the season at 71:21, scoring off a cross from the wing that found its way past Brittany Pearsall. Sophomore goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) totaled five saves for the Orange and Blue and picked up the win.
About the Bison
- The Bison have played 14 matches so far, eight on the road and six at home, and have collected wins over Sacred Heart (1-0), UMBC (5-1), Saint Francis (Pa.) (5-2), Cornell (1-0, OT), Navy (1-0), Holy Cross (6-0), Army (2-1) and Colgate (3-1).
- Bucknell has allowed just two first half goals this season, outscoring opponents, 13-2, before the intermission.
- Dervarics leads the Bison offense with nine goals and five assists for 23 points. As of the last Patriot League statistical report, she ranked second in points, first in points per game (1.64), second in goals and in goals per game (0.64) and second in assists and assists per game (0.36). Nationally, Dervarics entered the week tied for 31st in points per game and tied for 38th in goals per game.
- Matlack follows with 14 points (6g, 2a) and has two game-winners to her credit. She is seventh in the league in points and goals. She leads all freshmen both categories.
- Gentile follows with 12 points (4g, 4a), 10 of which have come in league play. She entered the week tied for ninth in the PL in points, 10th in points per game (0.86), tied for fourth in assists and fifth in assists per game (0.29).
- Sutton has played 1179:39 minutes in goal for the Bison and holds a 1.45 goals-against average and a .765 save percentage. She has made a total of 62 saves and is tied for the league lead with four shutouts on the year. Against then-ranked No. 12 Rutgers, Sutton made a career-high 10 saves.
Success in League Play
- Bucknell has enjoyed great success both offensively and defensively in its first four Patriot League matches, helping to stretch its record to 4-0-0 in league play for the first time since the squad went undefeated (6-0-0) in 1995.
- Over those four contests, the Bison have outscored their opponents 12-2, to pace the league in goals and points (32).
- On the defensive side, two out of the four games have been shutouts for Bucknell, which holds a team goals-against average of 0.50, while Sutton has played all 360 minutes, making 18 saves for a save percentage of .900 in league play.
Bison Milestones
- On Wednesday, Sept., 12, Bucknell played its 300th in match in program history, celebrating with a 5-2 win over Saint Francis (Pa.). The program currently holds an all-time record of 145-148-16 (.495).
- Dervarics' seven-point game against Holy Cross marked her first career hat trick and tied the third-highest single game points total in program history. Only two players (Lisa Gibbons and Kerry McDonnell) have posted more in a single contest, Gibbons holding the record at nine (4g, 1a). Dervarics became the sixth player in school history to record a hat trick, as well.
- Dervarics' three assists versus Saint Francis (Pa.) matched the second-highest single-game total in program history. The only other Bison to ever notch three or more assists in a match was Gibbons as she totaled three against Scranton in 1994 and set the Bucknell record in the same season with four against Lycoming.
- Bucknell career records update: Gentile is third in career points (79), third in career goals (32), fourth in career assists (15) and needs two to move into third in that category. With 14 career game-winning goals, Gentile is one shy of matching Gibbons' record (15). Dervarics is tied for seventh in career points (54, needs three to pass Katie McElligott (6th)), is tied for seventh in career goals (21, needs six to pass McElligott) and is tied for seventh in career assists (12, needs one to pass Leigh Raymont and Amy Riviere).

In the Polls
- The Bison were selected second in the Patriot League preseason poll, the team's highest ranking since 2002 (2nd with 78 points, three first-place votes, also 2nd in 1996). Bucknell totaled 85 points, which is its most ever in the preseason poll.
- This past Tuesday, Oct. 23, Bucknell earned its first regional ranking of the 2007 season as the squad debuted at No. 10 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Mid-Atlantic regional poll. The Bison, who received their first NSCAA regional ranking in program history last season, are tied for 10th on the list with Virginia Commonwealth (8-7-1). Virginia tops the Mid-Atlantic regional poll with a record of 10-1-4.
Looking Ahead
- Bucknell will close out the regular season with a non-league match against Princeton at home on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m., followed by a road contest at American on Nov. 3 at noon.
