LEWISBURG, Pa. - After pushing its Patriot League record to 4-0-0 last Saturday with a victory over Colgate, the Bucknell women's soccer team has earned its first regional ranking of the 2007 season as the squad debuted at No. 10 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Mid-Atlantic regional poll, it was announced on Tuesday.
The Bison (8-6-0), who received their first NSCAA regional ranking in program history last season, are tied for 10th on the list with Virginia Commonwealth (8-7-1). Virginia tops the Mid-Atlantic regional poll with a record of 10-1-4.
After playing a challenging non-league schedule, which featured several nationally- and regionally-ranked opponents, Bucknell has enjoyed great success both offensively and defensively in its first four Patriot League matches, helping to stretch its record to 4-0-0 in league play for the first time since the squad went undefeated (6-0-0) in 1995.
Over those four contests, the Bison have outscored their opponents 12-2, to pace the league in goals and points (32). Junior Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and senior Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) lead the way offensively for the Orange and Blue in PL matches, Dervarics with 11 points (5g, 1a) and Gentile with 10 (3g, 4a).
On the defensive side, two out of the four games have been shutouts for Bucknell, which holds a team goals against average of 0.50, while sophomore netminder Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) has played all 360 minutes, making 18 saves for a save percentage of .900.
The Bison will return home this coming Friday, Oct. 26, for a Patriot League contest against Lehigh, which is set to kick off at 7 p.m. The match will be carried live on internet video broadcast, available for a subscription fee through www.BucknellBison.com.
