WASHINGTON, D.C. - A five-meter penalty shot by Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) capped a four-goal fourth quarter and helped the No. 16 Bucknell men's water polo to its third consecutive victory as it defeated George Washington 9-8 Sunday morning. The win clinched second place in the CWPA Southern Division-East Region for the Bison, who improved to 15-10 overall and 5-3 in league play.
The game was close throughout as it was tied at 3-3 at the end of the first quarter and 4-4 at halftime. The Colonials took a one-goal lead (6-5) into the final quarter, but Bucknell erupted for four goals in the stanza to complete the come-from-behind victory. Masterson's game-winning goal, his team-high third of the game, came after Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) drew a penalty.
Two of Masterson's three goals came in the final minutes. He netted the game-tying score with 2:17 to play and then converted the penalty shot with 1:23 on the clock.
Peter O'Keefe (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter), who earned his second consecutive start, and just the third of his four-year career, led the Bison with four points on two goals and two assists. Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) added two goals apiece.
Much like they did Saturday night in a three-goal win at Johns Hopkins, freshman Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and sophomore Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) split time in goal. Gilhuly again played the first and third quarters and recorded three saves while yielding five goals. Donahue was in net for the other two quarters and stopped four shots while allowing just three goals.
By picking up its 15th win of the season, Bucknell equaled its win total from all of 2006. The Bison last won more than 15 games in 2004 when they posted a 17-14 mark. Also, Bucknell is on its first three-game winning streak since its nine-game streak ended the final weekend of September.
The Bison will wrap up their regular season Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against No. 15 Air Force in Annapolis, Md. Bucknell is 5-8 against ranked foes this season.
