HAMILTON, N.Y. - In a matchup of two of the three teams that entered the weekend tied atop the Patriot League standings, the Bucknell men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker Sunday afternoon, falling to Colgate 2-1 in overtime. The Raiders' Matt Leach converted a bicycle kick off a throw-in with just 90 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to snap the Bison's seven-game unbeaten streak.
Bucknell was aiming to stretch its unbeaten streak to eight games and equal the third-longest in program history, but lost in overtime for the second time this season and fell to 5-4-4 overall and 2-1-1 in Patriot League play.
The Bison had to come from behind to tie the score in the second half and did just that at the 48:49 mark. Justin Wolf played the ball into the box and both Conor O'Brien and Colgate goalkeeper David Cappuccio went for the ball. The ball came loose and O'Brien kicked the ball into the vacated net for his third goal of the season. The assist was Wolf's career high-tying third this year and the 11th of his career.
Colgate (7-4-2, 3-0-1 PL) got on the board first at the 34:25 mark when Steven Miller tallied his third goal of the season off a crossing pass from Chris Ross.
The Raiders had a lopsided advantage in shots, totaling 25 to Bucknell's 11. In overtime Colgate had a 6-2 edge in shots. Bison goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood), who yielded two goals in a game for the first time in exactly one month, recorded six saves to boost his career total to 207, just seven shy of 10th place in Bucknell history.
Cappuccio was called upon to make two saves for Colgate, which remained in a tie for first place in the Patriot League with American. Bucknell dropped to fourth place, but is still in position for a postseason berth with three league games to play.
The Bison will return home for four of their final five games. Next up is a non-league match at Varsity Soccer Field with Saint Francis (Pa.) Wednesday, Oct. 24. Live video of the contest will be broadcast through SportsJuice.com and BucknellBison.com.
