ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Playing its fifth game in three days, and its second in a span of just four hours, the No. 16 Bucknell men's water polo team lost to Air Force Sunday afternoon by an 8-6 score. Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) tallied a team-high four goals for the Bison, who defeated league foe George Washington by one goal earlier in the day in Washington, D.C.
Bucknell (15-11) kept the score close the entire game, but could not overcome a one-goal deficit heading into the final quarter as the Falcons extended the final margin to two goals by shutting out Bucknell in the fourth quarter.
Masterson, who registered three goals earlier in the day, finished with seven in Sunday's two contests. He now has 42 this season to stand second on the squad. He also upped his career total to 152, just 32 shy of 10th place on Bucknell's career list.
Senior co-captains Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) helped Masterson on the offensive end with one goal apiece. They both also added an assist. Rechel, who paces the Bison with a career-high 57 goals, has 156 in his four-year career, barely edging Masterson for the most among current players.
Freshman Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) continued his strong play in goal, making 10 saves, as he played the entire game. He now has a team-high 86 stops this season and has started 10 games, including the last four.
The loss dropped Bucknell's record to 15-11, but earlier in the day the Bison clinched second place in the CWPA Southern Division - East Region. They have faced 14 ranked teams and are a respectable 5-9 in those contests.
Bucknell is idle next weekend as it prepares for the Southern Championships, which will be held at Navy the first weekend in November. The Bison played three of their games this weekend at Navy.
