HAMILTON, N.Y. - Junior Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) scored twice, helping the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory at Colgate on Saturday evening, which marks the first time the Bison have won in Hamilton, N.Y., in program history. The win stretched Bucknell's streak to four straight victories and brought the Orange and Blue to 8-6-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the Patriot League for the first time since the squad went undefeated (6-0-0) in 1995.
Dervarics put the Bison on the board first as she collected a through ball from senior Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) and slipped it into the right side of the Raiders' goal at the 30:24 mark.
After trailing 1-0 heading into the intermission, Colgate (8-7-1, 1-3-0 PL) answered back at 51:13 as Franny Iacuzzi netted an unassisted tally to level the score at one.
Then in the 59th minute, Dervarics regained the lead for the Orange and Blue when she blasted a shot from the right corner of the box, off the far left post and into the goal for her team-leading ninth tally of the season. Now with 23 points on the year, Dervarics has surpassed her career highs for both goals and points in a single season. She also improved her rankings in Bucknell's record book as she is now tied for seventh in both career points (54) and career goals (21).
Freshman Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) later stretched the Bison advantage to 3-1 with her sixth of the season at 71:21, scoring off a cross from the wing that found its way past Brittany Pearsall.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) totaled five saves for the Orange and Blue, while Carly Sousa, who started in net for Colgate, stopped four shots over the first 53:24 and allowed one goal. Pearsall relieved her, playing the final 36:36 and did not log a save, while allowing the final two Bison tallies. Bucknell trailed the Raiders in shots, 15-11, but held the edge in corner kicks, 11-4. Fouls were 9-6, against the Bison.
Bucknell will return home next Friday, Oct. 26, for a Patriot League contest against Lehigh, which is set to kick off at 7 p.m. The match will be carried live on internet video broadcast, available for a subscription fee through www.BucknellBison.com.
