BALTIMORE, Md. - Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored a career-high seven goals to lead the No. 16 Bucknell men's water polo team to its second victory of the day as the Bison defeated Johns Hopkins 12-9 Saturday evening. Earlier in the day Bucknell, which will clinch second place in the Southern Division-East Region with a win Sunday morning at George Washington, defeated Harvard 11-6.
Rechel, who has a career-high 54 goals this season, scored his seven goals on seven attempts as he became the first Bison to net seven goals in a game since Ryan McCarty did it, also against Johns Hopkins, at the 2001 Southern Championships. Rechel tallied 10 goals in Saturday's two games.
Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin), who totaled five goals Saturday, helped Rechel on the offensive end with a pair of goals, while Peter O'Keefe (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter), who was making his second start of the season, Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) and Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) netted one apiece.
In addition to his goal, Roslyn posted a team-high four steals to give him 35 this season, just one shy of his career high. As a team, Bucknell totaled 11 steals as it improved to 2-0 against the Blue Jays this year.
Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) split time in goal. Gilhuly played the first and third quarters and made eight saves while yielding six goals. Donahue was strong in the second and fourth quarters, matching Gilhuly's eight saves while allowing just three goals.
With Saturday's two victories, Bucknell (14-10, 4-3 CWPA) is on its first two-game winning streak since beating Princeton, a team that lost to Johns Hopkins 12-4 Friday night, on Sept. 30 and Queens on Oct. 6. Additionally, the Bison are just one win away from equaling their total from all of 2006.
Bucknell will take on league opponent George Washington and No. 15 Air Force on Sunday. The game with the Colonials is at 9:30 a.m. and with a victory the Bison will finish league play 5-3 and in second place behind Navy.
