ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A solid final three quarters of play was not enough for the No. 16 Bucknell men's water polo team to overcome an early deficit as it lost to No. 11 Navy by a close 8-6 score Friday night at Scott Natatorium. Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Josh Sunday (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the Bison with two goals apiece.
Bucknell (12-10, 3-3 CWPA) trailed 4-1 at the end of the first quarter and proceeded to outscore Navy 5-4 the rest of the way. Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) relieved starting goalie Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) early in the second quarter and slowed the Mids' attack, allowing just three goals and making eight saves in his 20 minutes in the cage.
The Bison did struggle in six-on-five opportunities, converting just 1 of 10.
Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) and Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) each added one goal for Bucknell, meaning all six goals were scored by seniors. Roslyn tallied a pair of assists and Sunday had one as they tied for team-high honors with three points.
The loss was the eighth in the last nine games for the Bison, although six of those have been to nationally ranked teams. Overall, Bucknell is 5-8 when facing ranked foes this season.
Friday's contest was the third of the year for the Bison against Navy. Bucknell is 0-3 opposite the Mids, but two of the losses have been by just two goals.
Bucknell is slated to play four more games this weekend, including two on Saturday. It will play Harvard in Annapolis at 1 p.m. Saturday, while the nightcap will be at Johns Hopkins at 7 p.m.
