Phalen Shoots 79, Bison Women's Golf in 9th at Spider Invitational

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. -- Kristen Phalen (Duxbury, Mass./Tabor Academy) played the back nine in 1-under par and carded a team-best 79 in the first round of the Richmond Spider Invitational on Monday, and Bucknell is in ninth place after compiling a team score of 324.
Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland) also had good days, shooting 80 and 81, respectively. Kathryn Batchelor (Lawrenceville, N.J./Princeton Day School) posted an 84 and Leah Antkiewicz (Aliquippa, Pa./Quigley Catholic) 85 for the Bison, who had a quick turnaround after playing in the Rutgers Invitational in New Jersey on Friday and Saturday.
Maryland took the 18-hole lead with a first-round 301. Marshall is in second at 307, followed by Longwood and Columbia at 308. The Bison are ahead of Appalachian State (330), Monmouth (347) and The Citadel (368).
Stevy Loy of Columbia and Carla Wasienko of Maryland are tied for the individual lead at 2-under par.
The tournament concludes Tuesday morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start at Independence Golf Club.
