IRVINE, Calif. - Playing just its second unranked opponent in its last 10 games, the No. 15 Bucknell men's water polo team lost to Redlands by a 10-8 score Sunday morning to open the final day of the SoCal Tournament. The Bison were led by a career high-tying three goals from Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute).
Bucknell (11-8) will wrap up the weekend-long SoCal Tournament Sunday afternoon at 4:20 p.m. Eastern when it faces Pomona Pitzer. The winner of the contest will earn 15th place in the 16-team field that features 14 nationally ranked teams.
The Bison nearly ended their five-game losing streak, but came up just short. An extra-man goal by Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) with 2:18 left narrowed the score to 9-8, but Redlands' Andrew Becskehazy converted a penalty shot with one second on the clock to seal the victory for the Bulldogs (10-11).
With his three goals, Stupp equaled his career high he has tallied two other times in his two-year career. Five other Bison netted one goal apiece.
Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) played the second half in goal for Bucknell and had a strong performance, recording four saves and three steals while yielding just three goals. He has a total of 17 saves in three appearances this weekend.
Redlands, ranked as the No. 1 team in Division III, opened up a 7-5 halftime edge and was led by four goals from Ryan Hall and three from Becskehazy.
