PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- On a tough scoring day that saw only five of the 98 players in the field break 80, the Bucknell women's golf team opened with a 341 and sits in sixth place out of 18 teams after round one of the Rutgers Invitational.
An already wet Rutgers Golf Course was greeted with chilly temperatures and stiff breezes for Friday's opening round. Freshman Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland) paced Bucknell with an 83, which puts her in a tie for 18th place. Kristen Phalen (Duxbury, Mass./Tabor Academy) had a solid showing with an 84 in her season debut.
Also for the Bison, Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) each shot 87, and Kathryn Batchelor (Lawrenceville, N.J./Princeton Day School) shot 97.
Ellie Brophy of Yale took the individual lead with a 4-over-par 76. She is one shot ahead of Brittany Lambertson of St. John's.
Bethune-Cookman shot 318 to grab an 11-shot lead in the team standings. Yale is second at 329, followed by Siena (331), Rutgers (336), St. John's (337) and Bucknell. The Bison are one stroke in front of Lehigh and two ahead of Central Connecticut State.
The second and final round gets underway Saturday at 8 a.m.
