
Bucknell Men's Swimming & Diving Comes Away with One Win, One Loss on Alumni Weekend

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's swimming and diving squad came away with one win and one loss in its Patriot League double-dual meet in front of a packed Kinney Natatorium on Saturday. The Bison downed Colgate, 215-85, but fell to Army 191-109, moving their record to 4-4 (3-2 PL), while the Raiders are now 2-5 (0-2 PL) and the Black Knights improve to 6-2 (4-1 PL).
Sophomore Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area), junior Bradford Bennett (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area), junior Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and junior John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) starting things off with a win for the Orange and Blue in the 200 medley relay as the squad posted a time of one minute, 35.21 seconds, in the event.
Kawczenski earned an individual first-place finish for the Bison as well, swimming the 100 back in 52.98. Freshman David Iselin (Potomac, Md./Churchill) was also victorious, as he was first to touch the wall in the 200 back with a time of 1:57.99, after posting a fourth-place finish in the 100 back (55.43). Behind Iselin in the 200 back was sophomore Christopher Amato (East Norwich, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) with a time of 1:58.66, which was good for third in the event.
Bennett and sophomore Michael Deighan (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) took second and third in the 100 breast with times of 58.83 and 59.04, respectively. Later in the 200 breast, Deighan finished as the runner-up with the ninth-fastest time in Bucknell history (2:09.53), while Bennett came in fourth with a time of 2:11.56.
Steadman was the runner-up in the 100 free, touching the wall in 47.52 and Peterman followed in third with a time of 48.07.
Senior Matt Crandell (Winchester, Va./John Handley) claimed the runner-up spot in the 200 fly, swimming the event in 1:54.80, and posted a fourth-place time of 53.74 in the 100 fly.
Junior Theo Leriotis (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional Senior High) swam the 400 IM in 4:15.96 to take second in the event and came in fourth in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:06.78.
In the diving events, Jeffrey Manning (Bringhurst, Ind./Carroll Jr./Sr. High) was the runner up on the one-meter board with a mark of 236.00, while freshman Matt Traver (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown HS West) collected second in the three-meter after scoring 248.10 points.
During a break in the meet's action, former Bison head coach, Dick Russell was honored on the deck as Bucknell Director of Athletics John Hardt and current head coach Dan Schinnerer presented him with a plaque acknowledging his lasting contributions to the success of both the swimming and diving and water polo programs. Russell, a member of the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, coached the men's swimming and diving team from 1968-94 and created the water polo program at Bucknell, guiding the team from its inception as a varsity sport in 1977 until 1986. Russell's swim teams compiled a dual-meet record of 154-121 and won 11 conference championships.
The Bison will return to action when the team travels to New York, N.Y., on Saturday, Jan. 20, to take on Columbia at 4 p.m.
