LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell head men's and women's tennis coach Rebecca Helt announced Wednesday the hiring of Larry Peterson, who will begin his first collegiate position as the new assistant coach of both Bison programs.
Most recently, Peterson was the boys' and girls' assistant tennis coach at State College High School. In his three years as the assistant head coach for the boys' squad, the team compiled a record of 58-4 with two consecutive trips to the PIAA Team State Championship Final Four and earned a spot in the state quarterfinals. Peterson has qualified players in both singles and doubles for the PIAA Individual State Championships each of the last three years, including one who placed fourth in the state in doubles in 2004. As the assistant for the girls' squad, Peterson helped lead the team to a 19-13 record.
Peterson is still the head tennis professional at Toftrees Resort in State College, Pa., and is also the head tennis instructor for the Summer Study program at Penn State University. He still competes in the USTA tournaments, where he has recorded a singles record of 50-15 over the last three years with 10 tournament titles.
Peterson is a 1990 graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. He received his master of science degree in 1991 from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Additionally, he has completed course work for a master of arts degree in photo communications from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Before his career as a tennis professional and coach, Peterson was a newspaper photographer.
Peterson will help lead the Bison men's and women's tennis squads during this weekend's, Bloomsburg Invitational, which has been moved to Bucknell.
